The San Diego National Guard was formed in 1916 as a result of the passage of the National Defense Act. At its inception, the Guard consisted of only men from San Diego County. In 1925, it was established as an autonomous unit with headquarters located in downtown San Diego. The first national guard units were deployed to World War II and served honorably until 1945. Since then, the San Diego National Guard has grown significantly and now consists of over 16,000 members across 9 counties including parts of Imperial County and Riverside County. TheGuard’s mission is to promote public safety by providing training and support for local law enforcement officers; providing protection for military installations; guarding federal facilities; providing humanitarian assistance;gments assigned to state or federal task forces performing specific duties. National Guard troops are currently mobilized in support of various events throughout Northern California including Bastrop-San Marcos Blue Angels Memorial Flight at Abbott Air Force Base on July 4th, 2019 and Big Sur Open Water Swim on August 14th & 15th. As part of this nationwide mobilization process, each unit is also deploying its latest technology equipment which includes armored personnel carriers (APCs), motorcycles, helicopters, artillery pieces and more!
