The San Diego Navy has a long and diverse history of deploying gifts to sailors in the area. This is evident in the deployment of Christmas ornaments, ribbons, buttons, and other items to sailors stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar from 1898-2003. In 1903, the Naval Air Station Miramar was established as a proving ground for new aircraft types. One of these planes was an American biplane named USS Anacapa (AO-9), which was donated by Captain George W. Halsey of the United States Navy. The gift represented a significant expansion for naval aviation in Southern California. In 1938, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which renamed NAS Miramar NAS El Centro after Rear Admiral Harry S Truman who served as Commander Naval Forces Far East during World War II. The act also authorized funds to be spent on constructing an airfield adjacent to NAS Miramar that would become known as Port Hueneme Municipal Airport (PHL). As part of this effort, donations were solicited from local businesses and citizens in order to finance construction of the airport. In 1940, NAS El Centro became home to Pacific Fleet's Third Aircraft Carrier Squadron when USS Lexington arrived there from Pearl Harbor following herumnal visit by President Franklin D Roosevelt. During World War II, NAS El Centro played an important role as a training station for pilots and crew members required for carrier operations off Japan and Okinawa. It also conducted tests on various aircraft types including Boeing B-29 Superfortresses used against Japan's Home islands during World War II As with many naval installations throughout history,NAS El Centro experienced someenny Crises which included: 1944 - A fire broke out aboard USS Indianapolis (CV-8) while it was being towed back from Leyte Gulf after hitting land mines off Samar Island; all aboard were lost including commanding officer Lieutenant Commander JB Priestley USNR Commanding Officer Vice Admiral Rufus Knox USN relieved him with authority over vessel only days before she sailed; posthumously dubbed "the first sinkship" 1946 - Infection claimed life of Chief Petty Officer 2d Class James Ladd USNR when he entered cargo hold of Japanese submarine IJN Shirasu while conducting salvage operation; posthumious nickname "The White Death" due to his death within 24 hours after entering closed compartment
