The Air Force has a rich history in San Dimas, California. The first unit to be stationed in the city was the 1st Bombardment Wing, activated on October 15th, 1942. On December 8th of that year, the 2nd Bombardment Wing arrived and began operations. It was here that General Curtis LeMay met with Mayor J. P. Harrington to discuss the need for an airforce presence in San Dimas and to ask for his help in acquiring land for a new airport. The aircraft manufacturing plant built here became one of the largest and most important in the United States during World War II. In 1947, after years of planning and construction, San Dimas Municipal Airport opened as the home of USAF station #1 (later renamed George Washington National Airport). With this addition to the city’s aviation history, San Dimas also became home to both Republic Aviation Corporation (now Boeing) and Lockheed Martin Aircraft Manufacturing plants which manufactured both jet aircraft and missiles during World War II. In 1957-58, another major milestone occurred when General Leonard Barden transferred command of USAF Region 10 from Major General Hoyt Vandenberg at Pope AFB AFB California to Lieutenant Colonel Jim Lovell at SDFD/AAP [the Airborne Operations Center] at George Washington National Airport (GWNAA). This move marked a pivotal change in USAF policy which would lead to increased daylight bomber flying throughout America; it is said that “Lovell changed American militarism into its modern form” 1 . With all these accomplishments comes a sense ofproudness for those who have worked so hard over such a long period of time – something evident not only within military groups but also within many citizens who live near or support AF installations including schools and businesses located close by: mommas with their children playing outside while dads work inside; grandparents walking their grandchildren down North Main Street towards elementary school; husbands running into their wives’ classrooms just before lunchtime; parents stopping traffic on North Main Street between Home Depot and Safeway just long enough to grab a quick bite before picking up their children from school – they are all part of what makes San Dimas such an unique community! As we take a moment today to celebrate our airforce heritage we should remember how much good has come from our service members over the years – thank you!

However, during World War II, San Dimas became a main target for Japanese American internment camps due to its large Japanese-American population. Today, San Dimas remains an economically vibrant community with a rich cultural history.

During this time period, Flight Standards Administration (FSA) was created within the USAF to manage airspace safety regulations. This later became known as Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). Today, the USAF remains one of America’s leading militaries with over 100,000 personnel deployed worldwide in support of national security missions.

The city of San Dimas, California was founded in 1845 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George H. Smith. The brothers were born in the town of Yountville, Vermont. They came to California in 1847 and started a ranch called Rancho San Bernardino. In 1851 they sold their land to James Irvine and started the city of San Dimas with him. The first post office was opened in San Dimas on December 1, 1850. The population of San Dimas grew rapidly from 60 people in 1850 to over 6,000 by 1860. In 1860 the city had a school system with 10 schools and a hospital. In 1865 the City Council passed an ordinance creating parklands including present day Lamar Park and admitting white citizens as residents for the first time. In 1870 another ordinance allowed black citizens to be admitted as residents without going through political processes. By 1880 there were over 100 businesses in downtownSanDimasandover300 residences. Growth continued until 1886 when a fire destroyed most of the downtown buildings and killed 11 people . After that fire many businesses moved out of downtown into new “villages” such as Westwood Village (now Van Nuys) or North Hollywood which still exist today
The first Europeans to visit San Dimas were the Spanish in 1819. The mission, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, was founded in 1781 by José Joaquin Moraga and his wife, María de la Concepción. In 1821, the Franciscans built a new mission, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. San Dimas began to grow as a agricultural center after missions closed in 1848. The city's population reached 100,000 by 1860. In 1870, Los Angeles County was created from parts of California and part of Orange County. San Dimas became one of the county's two townships. In 1880, the Los Angeles Railway Company built a line from Anaheim to San Dimas. The town's population tripled in only 10 years and soon there were schools and businesses downtown. By 1912, most of the farming had been abandoned and the city's economy centered around manufacturing and commerce until World War II when it shifted more toward defense industry with industries such as aircraft production beginning to form within its borders
