The San Dimas Army Depot was founded in 1944 and became a major munitions manufacturing center for the California National Guard. The depot served as home to the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, until its closure in 1992. The Depot's year-round operations produced over 2 million pounds of munitions and services to American soldiers throughout World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In addition to military hardware and supplies, the Depot also produced a wide variety of civilian products including electrical items, plumbing fittings, automobiles, appliances and more. In 1992, when the 3rd Battalion 9th Marines vacated its old barracks at San Dimas Army Depot, they donated their equipment and property to the city of San Dimas in order to create an open-air museum dedicated to America's military history in Southern California. The museum is currently operated by County Historical Society of San Diego which leased space from the City of San Dimas on West Olive Avenue. The Museum has over 20 000 square feet of exhibit space that includes an artillery battery replica; a Civilian Marksman Rifle display; a Pre-War Auto Parts display; WWII Vehicles displays include P-51 Mustang fighter planes and Tractor Beelines; a Military Equipment displays includes Tanks (M1 Abrams), Helicopters ( Huey Co helicopters), M4 rifles (AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles), tanks/vehicles from both world wars (MMT USATOMs) as well as artifacts dating back to 1900 A.D..

The city of San Dimas, California was founded on December 29, 1873 by James W. Webb and his wife Anna Maria de los Santos Webb. The town was named after the Spanish settlement of San Diego. In 1881, the United States government purchased the Rancho Cucamonga parcel adjacent to present-day San Dimas from José Joaquín Balboa and established a military post there called Camp Pendleton. In 1892, the post was moved to its current location in San Dimas when Camp Pendleton became a naval base. In 1936, San Dimas became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people. The city experienced growth during World War II as thousands of young Americans came to work at Navy yards and other facilities in the area. Growth stopped during the postwar period as jobs shifted to other areas in California or overseas. However, recent years have seen some growth in businesses and residences within the limits of San Dimas City Hall. Today,SanDimas is one of Southern California's most ethnically diverse cities with a wide range of cultures represented including Hispanic (of all ages), Asian American (including many Vietnamese immigrants), African American (including Jamaicans and West Indians), European American (British expats living here among others), Native American (Cherokee) and Pacific Islander residents.
In 1881, San Dimas was one of the first places in California to be re-titled after a president. The town was renamed Washington on April 8, 1882, in honor of George Washington Carver. The city's first post office opened in 1885. The population of San Dimas peaked at over 100,000 in 1907 but then declined as technological advances made agriculture and industry more important. By 1910 the population had decreased to under 50,000. In 1930 the population again decreased to 30,000 before increasing by 10,000 between 1933 and 1936 due to World War II. During the 1960s and 1970s San Dimas experienced a significant growth period with the addition of many large companies such as McDonnell Douglas Aircraft and Hewlett-Packard Company. However during this time there were also concerns that crime rates were rising which contributed to several bank closures and layoffs throughout the decade. In 2000 San Dimas became an incorporated city along with other cities in Metropolitan Los Angeles County when it merged with other nearby cities including Bell Gardens and South Gate
