At the time of the California Gold Rush in 1848, San Dimas was an agricultural community consisting of about seventy small adobe huts. The town sprang up around a blacksmith shop, sawmill, and flour mill. By 1865, when it became part of Riverside County, San Dimas had over 1,000 residents and a post office.
