San Dimas is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 105,735 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, bordered by La Brea and Sylmar to the south and east, West Hollywood to the north and west, and Agoura Hills to the northwest. The name "San Dimas" means "place of beautiful mountains". The first European settlers in what is now San Dimas were Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (founded in 1795) and Mission Santa Catalina de Pico (founded in 1823). They named their community after Mount Diablo which they saw from their pueblo. In 1871, John Sutter had founded Sutter's Mill on what is now North Central Boulevard in downtown San Dimas. In 1916, Henry Ford established two factories that were soon responsible for more than half of all jobs in San Dimas during World War I – General Motors Plant No. 1 on Mount Olivet Road near El Monte Boulevard and Ford’s Willow Run Arsenal Factory on Fulton Street near Whittier Boulevard – both producing munitions for war use only; neither factory produced any goods for civilian consumption apart from cars manufactured by Ford’s own company plants inside America during those years.
