San Dimas is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 66,693 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino and is bordered to the north by San Gabriel Valley and to the east by Pasadena. To its south lies Riverside County. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Dimas were members of a small party led by Gaspar de Portolà, who explored the region in 1769–70. The area that now includes downtown was part of Rancho Cahuenga los Olivos which was purchased from Juan Antonio Alvarado in 1810. In 1821, Mission Santa Cruz arrived here and began an era of growth that continues to this day with a diverse economy that touches many sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, health care and education. In 1892, William Humble donated land for what would become City Park which included much of today's downtown area as well as portions of today's freeways such as US 101 and I-10. On November 15th 1920 voters passed a referendum setting aside 2/3 acre (0.9 ha) for each inhabitant within City Park for future public use including sidewalks, playgrounds and other park amenities; this ordinance became known as "The Humble Amendment" after then-Mayor Humble himself who championed it during his tenure from 1921 until his death in 1934). On July 16th 1939 movie mogul Louis B Mayer announced plans to build a movie studio on 142 acres (59 ha) he had leased from Harriman Oil Company just outside town limits; construction started soon thereafter but quickly ran into trouble due to local opposition and ultimately stopped completely due to World War II shortages of labor resources. After years of reflection and planning City Council voted on December 12th 1946 unanimously approval for annexation into the newly formed city of Los Angeles through an act called "Annexation Act No 2". Notwithstanding this recent history there has been ongoing development throughout most everything within city limits resulting in continued growth over time - exemplified by Downtown LA's rapidly swelling population since 2000 when it reached nearly 100,000 residents! Today you can find plenty restaurants, stores, bars & clubs all open late without fear of traffic or long lines!
The town of San Dimas, California was founded in 1887 by two brothers, George and Lorenzo Dimas. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad presence and the production of agricultural goods. In the 1920s, san Dimas became a center for Hollywood filmmaking with many studios being located in the town. The town experienced a period of economic decline in the 1940s through 1950s as a result of World War II shortages of munitions and other materials. However, since the late 1990s, San Dimas has been experiencing an increase in development as a result of its location within commuting distance to Los Angeles and other major cities.
