San Dimas, California is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 104,604 as of 2019. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Pasadena and is the 5th most populous city in Southern California. The first people to live in what is now San Dimas were the Tongva Indian tribe. In 1869, Mexican land grantee Presidio Land Grant No. 8 was made to Juan Pascual Chavez for Rancho San Pedro Mission Viejo which included all of what is now San Dimas. The town began to form from the many small villages that dotted this area during its early years. In 1882, a group of farmers known as the Palos Verdes Association bought 1/2 mile (3 km) east of present-day downtown San Dimas from Manuel Nieto for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). This location became known as Agua Caliente Hill because it was one of several hills near which hot water heated homes at that time. In 1886, another group of farmers purchased 3/4 mile (1 km) east and south of where Agua Caliente Hill now stands from Josefina Sanchez for $5 per acre ($25 per hectare). They named their new settlement after Maria Antonieta de la Concepción y Gómez de Montoya y Cisneros (1768-1855), queen consort of Mexico under Emperor Carlos III and widow of Don José de Molina y Zúñiga y Payánez; she also had issue by her husband with King Ferdinand VII. Her name at various times was Santa Fe Springs and La Purísima Concepción del Monte Realista de las Californias or simply Santa Fe Hillsborough Avenue before being changed to San Dimas Boulevard in 1936 when it became part of US 101 corridor following State Route 54's routing changes during World War II During World War II, much Of Southern California was turned into anArmy Air Forces training ground called "Tondo" or "Gitomerch" due to strategic location near Thornton AFB on Rodeo Drive between Hollywood Blvd./University Ave./Highland Rd./Flamingo Rd./US 101 and Topanga Canyon Boulevard/. Many industries such as munitions manufacturing moved there including Boeing Company aircraft plants on Rodeo Drive and Eastern Aircraft Corporation plant on Ventura Boulevard which produced fighter planes like Lockheed P-38 Lightning jets

The city of San Dimas, California was founded in 1887 by pioneers who came from Mexico. The first European to set foot on the present day San Dimas Peninsula was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. After years of exploration and study, Manuel Nieto who was governor of Mexico City in 1792 sent an expedition under Father Gabriel Baca to explore the peninsula. In 1821, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna commissioned José Joaquín Cámpora to survey and map the area. The first towns were founded on what is now San Dimas Boulevard: Encinitas (1822), Rancho Viejo (1825), and Villa Park (1827). In 1829, John Sutter arrived at Chula Vista with his party of missionaries and found new land for Mission San Francisco del Buen Pastor. He donated 1,000 acres (40 km2) of land to the mission as well as a small house called "El Pueblo" or "The Village". The town gradually grew from a population of about 100 in 1835 to over 2,000 by 1850. In 1865, it was decided that there should be a separate County seat for Southern California since many residents living near Los Angeles did not want their county merged into Los Angeles County. So Alcala became the first county seat outside ofLos Angeles when it was created on November 3, 1865 from parts of Kern and Orange counties. On May 15, 1886, fire destroyed part of Old Town Chinatown located just east of Interstate 5 between Encinitas Boulevard and Slauson Avenue; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of modern Chinatowns across North America. In 1898 during World War I much progress had been made in developing Don Valley with its multiple airports which would later become Porter Airport; however Don Valley reverted back into agricultural territory during World War II due to American military efforts in that area
