It was founded by Mexicans in 1847 as Villa Nueva and became part of the United States in 1848. The population of San Dimas increased rapidly from its initialpopulation of 60 to 1,500 during the late 1800s due to the arrival of agriculturalists and other pioneers who began settling in this area. The city experienced rapid growth after it was designated as a town by Governor Pio Pico in 1906. In 1958, San Dimas became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with a rich cultural heritage dating back to its early days. The history of San Dimas can be traced back more than 100 years ago when Mexican immigrants started arriving in what is now San Dimas County. Many were farmers who settled near present-day Rancho Cucamonga and Valley Village on behalf of members of their families who had left Mexico for religious reasons. By 1850, many Mexicans had settled within what is now San Dimas County, including some who had left Villa Nueva for fear that they would not be able to return home again should their homes become national property following Mexico's revolution that year. As settlement continued throughout the 1850s and 1860s, various churches were built along McDowell Road (now Interstate 5) which served as transportation between different parts of the county at that time. By 1875, over 1,000 people lived withinSan Dimas limits; however, much like other areas across Southern California at that time, there were very few businesses or services available to those living within its borders outsideof agricultural endeavors such as raising livestock or providing groceries. These towns quickly grew into major cities due largelyto their proximity to mines exits where men went prospecting for minerals while also having accessto goods/services unavailable anywhere else outside Northern California at that time such as grocery stores/telegraph wires/roads etc.; furthermore they developed essential infrastructure necessaryforcities such as schools/libraries/police departments etc.. Bordering Los Angeles eastward on either side was Fresno County making it easy for settlers wanting accessto milk products from north central California while eastward bordered Mono Countycontaining valuable mineral deposits used by miners during this era.; accordingly numerous small villages sprung up allaround this area including Ontario(today’s Menifee), Lancaster(now Simi Valley)), Waddell(nearSimi Valley), Fillmore Heights(), Madera Creek(), Chino Hills()and Agoura Hills() today known collectively as Northridge (). In addition several large villages dottedalong both sides including Van Nuys(), Woodland Hills(), Brentwood(), Hawthorne Heights()) today known collectively as Echo Park().
