San Dimas is a city in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 154,971 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The name "Dimasa" means "place of water" in the Tongva language. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Dimas were Spanish missionaries and traders who traveled through Central California between 1821 and 1825. They discovered small villages of Native Americans living in the area and heard about gold discoveries to the east by Mexican merchants. In 1826, José Joaquin Culpio, an American expatriate from Santa Fe, New Mexico, founded a small town called Rancho de la Purisima Concepción on land that he had purchased from Juan Bautista de Anza for $2 million. In 1847, businessman John Sutter acquired Rancho San Andreas from Culpio and developed it into one of Southern California's most important agricultural areas with over 1 million acres (500 km²). Sutter also built Mission San Gabriel Arcángel as a cathedral and began construction on what would become known as Santa Barbara City Hall while still living in Sacramento. After his death in 1850 his widow donated land near modern-day Los Angeles to establish what became known as Sutter Park; this parcel included present-day downtown San Dimas as well as much of eastern Pasadena and western Bel Air neighborhoods including La Brea Tar Pits Preserve adjacent to UCLA campus. In 1860s entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald invested $5 million dollars in building three railways that connected Los Angeles with Anaheim: The Orange Railway ran down Harbor Boulevard from Downtown LA to Westminster (northwest corner of Hwy 101), The Tustin Railroad ran north from Newport Beach along State Route 462 east to Van Nuys (southwest corner of I-10), and The Burbank Railroad ran south from Hollywood north along Ventura Boulevard to Buena Park (northwest corner of SR 54). These railways transformed Southern California into an vast manufacturing center with many new mills built during this time period such as Wernher von Braun's Redstone Arsenal just outside Covina which manufactured ballistic missiles for America during World War II
