The resulting fire destroyed over 4000 buildings in what is now downtown Los Angeles. The city was incorporated on December 3, 1892 as a result of a referendum held that year. It was named for Ignacio Béjar San Román who served as Mayor from 1893 to 1897. At its peak, San Dimas had a population of 140,000 people and was one of the most important cities in Southern California.
