The San Fernando Valley has been home to the Los Angeles Air Force Base since 1941. The base was originally called "Majestic" and was first used as an airbase for a bomber squadron. In 1947, the Air Force acquired land in the valley and began construction on what is now known as "Majestic." The new base became operational in 1951 and served as the primary training ground for USAF fighter pilots. Majestic also housed one of NATO's two nuclear arsenals during the Cold War. In 1961, Majestic was renamed "Northrop Grumman Aircraft Division," which remained its permanent name until 1993 when it was again changed to "San Fernando Valley Air National Guard Base." Since 1994, San Fernando Valley AFB has been responsible for all military aviation activities within Orange County. In addition, SFABG operates several thousand acres of airspace within Southern California that provides critical safety and security services to citizens. Today, San Fernando Valley AFB continues to serve as a vital local facility providing security for air travelers in Southern California as well as providing training opportunities for American ANG pilots and aircrews from around the world.
