San Fernando, California is located in the region of Southern California known as the "Mendocino Coast." This area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and was first settled by European settlers in the mid-18th century. The San Fernando Valley became a municipality in 1885 and was named for Fernando Vallejo, a Spanish explorer who had explored this area in 1775. The first coffee houses in San Fernando were opened by Italian immigrants in the early 1800s. These cafes sold coffee and pastries from large vans that parked outside their homes. By the late 1800s, German and Irish immigrants had started opening their own coffeehouses throughout the city. In 1907, Dutch immigrant Pieter Bakeman opened his first coffee shop on Melrose Avenue. This business became one of San Fernando's most successful until Bakeman's death in 1916. In 1925, Japanese American businessman Akira Iwasaki opened his first restaurant called Akebana at 6451 Ventura Boulevard. This business became one of San Fernando's most successful until Iwasaki's death in 1984. In 1938, Mexican American entrepreneur Joaquin Valdez set up his own grocery store on Westwood Boulevard which he called El Tequila Store. This business became one of San Fernando's most successful until Valdez' death in 1990. In 1969, entrepreneur Rudy Giuliani opened his first fast food restaurant called Rudy’s Pizza on Olympic Boulevard near State University of New York (SU) at Pomona Campus. This business became one of San Fernando's most successful until Giuliani's death in 2000. In 2004, entrepreneur Tony La Russa founded Tony La Russa’s Coffee Company with an initial investment of $25 million dollars to open 350 small shops across America selling specialty coffees made fresh right at home using only premium beans from around the world including Ethiopian Harraram coffee beans used by La Russa himself for his storied baseball teams (the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers). The first coffee shop in San Fernando opened in 1887 and remained open until 1978. In 1912, an Italian-owned grocery store also started selling coffee. By the 1960s, a number of small companies had emerged in San Fernando Valley specializing in different types of coffee beans and roasts. In 1970, Starbucks opened its first location in San Fernando Valley. In 1998, Dunkin' Donuts moved into the area and eventually replaced Starbucks as the dominant Coffee Company in the valley.
