In 1847, Englishman John Sutter founded the town of San Fernando in what is now Los Angeles County. The town was named for the Spanish word for "starvation." At its peak, San Fernando had a population of around 10,000 people and was considered one of the most prosperous towns in California. However, by 1870, San Fernando's prosperity had dissipated and it failed to reach its former level of activity. In that year, it merged with neighboring communities to form the city of Los Angeles. The history of San Fernando is intertwined with that of Los Angeles. When Sutter first settled in Northern California, he founded two small villages called Monterey and Kingsbury on the banks of the Santa Clara River. These villages were used as part of a military outpost guarding missions in Central California during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, they began construction on a national capital at Mexicali. Unsuccessful efforts to build this capital led to Mexican president Perniciouso Tuxedo ordering his army to march into Sonoma Valley in order to seize control over irrigation supplies leading up to Sacramento River. The resulting battle at Buena Vista Hill ended with Mexican forces retreating back across the river and Mexicans losing control over much of northern California including Monterey and Kingsbury. Sutter decided against moving his village located on Mount Diablo because he believed that rich deposits existed there worth exploration. He instead founded his new settlement at San Fernando on April 20th 1847 which would soon become one of North America's most successful towns due to its location, prosperity and growing population. The original town site consisted only of an adobe hut complex surrounded by dirt fields and bushes. On September 14th 1849 when Sutter reopened his store following a long drought conditions throughout North America caused by bad weather up high where water was scarce but also polluted due to lack thereof), he discovered what would later be known as The Bestoil well located within today's downtown area between State Street & West First Street (now Pershing Avenue). During this time period oil wells were still being drilled primarily through natural gas wells however noxious fumes from these gas wells were reaching homes or businesses located nearby including those owned by Captains Richard Conte Sr., James Fenton & others who established themselves near present day Beverly Hills Boulevard & Highland Avenue; east off Spring Street; south off Wilshire Boulevard; northwest off La Cienega Boulevard
