The town has undergone numerous name changes including Castroville (1868-1871), Northfork (1876-1901), Kingsbury (1904-1920), South Fork (1920-1925), Westlake (1925-1960) and finally Smithfield (1960). However, no single name has been universally accepted as the official designation for the town since it began operations circa 1853. One popular theory suggests that “San Felipe” – or “Saint George” – should have been given to San Fernando because so many celebrities from that era were buried there such as Mariano Rivera and Judy Garland. Another suggestion suggests that “Los Angeles” could have been chosen instead because it was immediately adjacent to Hudspeth County at that time while Santa Clara County only formed after Californication law took effect in 1850 which gave majority control over Alta California to Mexico! numerous artifacts from San Felipe culture dating back 8500 BC have been discovered near present day downtown LAX Airport!
