From its inception until 1942 it served within both World Wars I and II. After World War II, members of the National Guard were reorganized into what is now known as the U.S. Army National Guardsmen (USAGN). The San Fernando Valley National Guard was organized on November 15, 1911. The unit was activated the next day and served in World War I. In 1920, the National Guard moved to Valley City and continued to serve there until 1931 when it moved to Hollywood Hills. From 1932-1939, the National Guardsmen served in World War II as part of the California Army National Guards. They mobilized again during the Korean War and were called back into service in 1973. The San Fernando Valley National Guard has since been disbanded but their history lives on through their members who continue to serve our community today.
San Fernando is a city in the County of Los Angeles, California, United States. The population was 117,869 at the 2010 census. The city is located in the southeastern corner of Los Angeles County and named after San Fernando Valley. It was founded on April 14, 1887 by James Wolkentin and his brother-in-law George Barnard as an agricultural community known as New Hope Ranch. On November 15, 1893, part of what is now Hollywood was annexed from San Fernando Valley to form the town of Hollywood. On May 24, 1907, Hollywood became the first incorporated municipality in Los Angeles County when it voted to become a city under its own charter. In 1912–13 and 1917–18 it served as both county seat and capital of Los Angeles County; however these positions were switched to Pasadena in 1913 during Mayor James Wolkentin's administration because he saw opportunity there for development outside of downtown L.A., while simultaneously seeking state legislative representation downriver in Burbank (at that time part of Pasadena). In 1927 Mayor Roy Sebring proposed annexing Santa Monica Peninsula adjacent to Beverly Hills into the city limits but this proposal met stiff opposition from powerful Southern citrus growers who felt they had been wronged by annexation plans favored by then-Governor Culbert Johnson (Johnson had been appointed by Roosevelt after serving as Secretary of Agriculture). After much back and forth between Sebring's office and elected officials including State Senator Ralph Yarborough (D-Los Angeles), on September 3, 1928 finally approval for annexation was granted when Beverly Hills voters passed a referendum ratifying Sebring's plan with only 1 percent dissenting. The early years were difficult for San Fernando because it competed against other municipalities for attention from developers interested in building new cities around the rapidly growing metropolitan area. Despite this competition, many residents raised their families here and built churches and schools that remain important today. In 1951 Mayor Raymond Fenton declared any further growth within City Limits “uneconomic” so San Fernando morphed into a small town once again characteristically self-reliant with its own fire department, library system, grocery store/cafeteria combo restaurant/barbershop/chamber Of Commerce & Masonic Temple complex until 1984 when substantial redevelopment brought about increased public input which led to passage of Measure R – giving citizens control over such activities as zoning changes – making San Fernando an even more vibrant community today with strong ties to its historical neighbors across Ventura Boulevard.

In 1821, Mexico ceded control of Alta California to United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The new government named the valley after Saint George, patron saint of warfare and victory. The population grew rapidly during this time due to agriculture and transportation improvements brought about by Commodore John Dutton'sMission San Fernando Rey de las Palmas Expedition in 1844-45 which explored Mucho Bay for water resources. Gold was found nearby but no mining ever took place until after World War II when many small gold mines were developed hereabouts such as Adobe Valley Mines near Claremont and Mount Whitney Mines just south of san francisco
