The Navy has a long and proud history of deploying its gifts to support the military and civilians in San Fernando Valley. The first navy gift was delivered in 1887, when Commodore John W. Stevens donated a steamboat, the USS Constitution, to be used as a hospital ship at Camp Pendleton. Naval Hospital No. 1 opened its doors in 1931, and the San Fernando Valley became home to naval hospitals throughout World War II. In 1951, Commander-in-Chief Admiral Ernest J. King ordered the creation of Naval Base Ventura County (NBC) to provide essential services for NBC's growing population of sailors and Marines. Today, NBC is one of the most important naval installations in Southern California, providing critical operations such as responder response to natural disasters and terrorist threats; hosting international visitors; training naval officers from all over the world; and playing an integral role in military maneuvers across Southern California. During our time as residents of San Fernando Valley these past few decades we have seen many changes take place within the Navy community itself - from larger ships docked at NAS Lemoore today due to increased Defense spending (the USS Enterprise class is now mothballed), through new technology being brought into play with advances like unmanned submarine systems (UUS) or additional aircraft carriers docked on NAS Whiting Bay - all while our local economy continues to grow with businesses benefiting from both military deployments (like Marine Corps Logistics Squadron 41's recent deployment for supplies needed for Operation Neptune's Spear) as well as civilian needs like Veterans Affairs Medical Center expansions/modifications etcetera etcetera... It truly feels like we are always part of something big happening here! As someone who grew up attending Pacific Lutheran University just downriver from NAS Lemoore - which housed numerous classrooms/facilities used by both navy commanders during their visitations back then - I can testify that it would be an understatement to say that navy gifts have been greatly impacts on my education experience hereabouts! For example: every year during their visit Commodore Stevens would donation two steamboats worth of general cargo which could be boarded onto LCSs moored near campus for transport headed out into Lompoc Sound & back again various times each day during their stay... thus helping us students become familiar with how oceanography really works (& what types of supplies they might need along the way). This type of activity not only helped us learn more about maritime professionals but also gave us some great fishing opportunities too! Furthermore, other classes/programs got a lot more exposure because we were able to use those boats either participating in teambuilding exercises or ferrying materials back & forth between campuses sometime during their visits(such as photos taken onboard ULS Netley)... pretty cool stuff considering nowadays boats usually carry no more than 10 people max aboard them so it definitely wasn't easy getting everyone together on those trips tho ;) So there you go folks - another story behind why navy Gifts have been such an important part of our community & culture hereabouts over the years!
