The San Fernando Valley is home to one of the most colorful and vibrant naval communities in the United States. Naval ships from various navies have been stationed here for more than a century, contributing significantly to the community's maritime history. Today, the San Fernando Valley is an important hub for naval activities and provides vital resources for coastal defense. In 1881, California Governor John H. Broome issued a proclamation calling for donations of navy vessels to be sent to help protect the state's coastlines against invasion. within days, dozens of ships had arrived at Long Wharf in downtown Los Angeles. The fleet consisted of six frigates, twenty-four corvettes, and twelve torpedo boats. Today, each of the navy's ships presence in San Fernando County can be remembered through both its official name and nickname – USS Enterprise (CVN 71), USS Preble (DDG 61), USS Porter (CVN 73), USS Simms (SSBN 692), USCGC Miami (LPD 27) and USCGC Cairo (CG 51). A variety of events are held annually honoring these veteran sailors and their contributions to Southern California's maritime culture. USS Enterprise CVN 71 was decommissioned on December 15th 2006 after serving with distinction during World War II as part of Task Force 58 which fought off Japanese forces off Okinawa while Allied forces bombed Hiroshima. She was renamed USS Preble DDG 61 on July 1st 2007 in honor of Rear Admiral James Pseudolus Preble who commanded Task Force 58 during WWII as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron 21 which operated out of Pearl Harbor Hawaii before being transferred to Destroyer Squadron 10 at Yokosuka Japan on September 8th 1944 where he served until his death on August 24th 1945 due To wounds received during battle with Japanese warships near Guam Island on April 20th 1945 while escorting Carrier Group 7TF8W which participated in Operation Foray into Lingayen Gulf #2 following Japan’s Invasion Of Taiwan On February 14th 1945 The ship has been docked at Terminal High Altitude Area now being towed by tow truck from her former berth at Pier 39 West Hollywood Marina into dry dock where she will start restoration beginning Monday morning January 9TH 2020 less than two weeks after her original crew were laidoff when her keel was delivered

The USS Constitution, a ship made entirely of navy blue, was commissioned in 1847 and served as the flagship of the California Squadron in World War II. In 1961, the USS Enterprise joined the fleet and served as flagship until her decommissioning in 1992. The current USS Long Beach was commissioned in 2003 and is currently serving as flagship of Fleet Forces Pacific.

San Fernando Valley is a valley in the eastern region of Los Angeles County, California. It is bordered by east-central San Gabriel Valley to the north, west-central Simi Valley to the south, and Ventura County to the east. The valley was first populated by Native Americans and then became part of Mexico during the Mexican–American War. After becoming an American territory, California named it after Mount San Fernando (of which only a small peak remains). In 1874, following completion of the Central Pacific Railroad through the area, San Fernando became one of two towns in Los Angeles County along with Santa Monica. Both were renamed after American Presidents George Washington and James K. Polk when their counties were organized intoLos Angeles County on November 3, 1887.
The first Europeans to arrive in San Fernando Valley were the fathers of modern day Los Angeles, José Altuve and Juan Crespo. They arrived on December 17, 1781 aboard the ship La Presa. The two men were part of a group of thirteen Spanish soldiers who journeyed from Acapulco, Mexico to explore southern California. They landed at what is now downtown Los Angeles on January 1, 1782. At the time it was known as Rancho Santa Clara de la Cañada de los Olivos. The land that would eventually become San Fernando Valley was purchased from wealthy Mexican settlers by Captain John Sutter in 1847. He named the area after his friend and fellow sailor Gabriel Moraga. In 1872, one of Sutter's employees, James Irvine built an orange grove near present-day Ventura Boulevard and San Vicente Drive. In 1893, citrus growers opened their businesses along Orangethorpe Avenue east of Ventura Boulevard and south of Interstate 5 (now I-5). By 1914 there were more than 100 orange groves in San Fernando Valley.
