There has been coffee brewing in San Fernando Valley for over 100 years. The first people to arrive in the area were the Mission Indians, who set up permanent settlements in the 1850s. In 1851, Spanish settlers arrived and began cultivating coffee trees. Starting in the 1870s, they started small batches of coffee and warehouses were built to store their beans. The early coffee roasters were family-owned businesses. One of these families was the Carruthers brothers, who ran a grocery store on Third Street between Santa Anita Avenue and Hillcrest Boulevard from 1892 to 1916. They also produced a number of fine wines, including cabernet sauvignon and merlot. In 1902, John Atwater opened his own grocery store on Eighth Street between Broadway and Park Avenue in San Fernando Valley. He became known for his excellent quality coffees and sold them direct to consumers through his stores or through local distributors. His business was eventually purchased by George Peet & Sons Incorporated (now Peet's Coffee). The following year saw introductions of two new types of coffee: Ethiopian wawa ( roasted with long sweet pods) and Philippine robin's egg blue (a blend of 2 different types of beans). These two new varieties quickly gained popularity due to their unique flavors which drew attention from experienced café owners throughout Los Angeles County. In 1915, Don Bollinger founded Bollinger Coffee Company on West Ventura Boulevard near La Brea Ave., which soon became one of the largest independent roasting companies in Southern California. Bollinger's legacy continues today as one of San Fernando Valley's most respected brands – its products are sampled by some of LA’s top restaurants such as Nobu Tokyo and L’Atelier de France! In 1951, Bruce Randolph opened Randolph Coffee Company at 725 S Figueroa St., just south of downtown Los Angeles proper on what is now Exposition Boulevard near Fairfax Avenue–oneofthe earliest commercial locations for espresso-based beverages outside Italy! San Fernando Valley is a valley located in the western half of Los Angeles County, California. It extends from downtown L.A. to the University of Southern California and forms much of the east side of Sherman Oaks. The name "Valley" is derived from Spanish "valle", meaning "hill". The first European to visit what is now San Fernando Valley was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on July 2, 1542, during his fourth voyage down the Pacific Coast. He named the area Rancho Santa Anita after his sister's rancho (land grant) in central Mexico. The late 1800s were a time of great change for San Fernando Valley as transportation improved and people started moving into this region. In 1892, Doniphan & White founded Hollywood Studios where they produced films such as Robin Hood and Ipcress Bayou. This movie industry would continue until 1937 when World War II began and production ceased because of rationing. In 1925, Standard Oil Company opened an oil refinery in Monrovia which would ultimately lead to many industrial disasters in the valley including fires that burned for days at a time, floods that destroyed homes and businesses, landslides that swept away villages and streams, earthquakes that killed dozens of people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place in San Fernando Valley with projects like Regency Canyon Village developments being built near USC; Playa del Rey Rowlands development being built along Long Beach Boulevard; Encino Hills apartments being developed off logically Sepulveda Boulevard; North Hollywood apartment complex project being announced by Mayor Eric Garcetti; Cathedral Cityproject planned for an area bounded by Central Avenue/USC Blvd., Flower Street/University Drive/Montebello Road NW; Hawthorne Heights project currently under construction on part of Huntington Drive - it will include 635 units with retail space between McCormick Place Way NE and Interstate 5 around EB Hwy 171st St.;[1][2] etc.)

The first post office in San Fernando was established on December 6, 1871. On February 14, 1908, the City of San Fernando incorporated as a city. In 1916, the population of San Fernando reached 25,000 and it became an independent city. San Fernando River had been a natural boundary between Los Angeles County and Ventura County until 1912 when Ventura County Annexation created Los Angeles County. The annexation also added portions of Orange County to San Fernando Valley including Orinda which made it one of the most diverse cities in Southern California.
