The United States Air Force's 480th Bomb Wing, known as the "Los Angeles" Group, was activated on 15 September 1942 at Tolosa Army Air Field in Tulare County, California. The wing was redesignated as the 480th Bombardment Wing on 1 October 1942 and assigned to Ninth Air Force. The wing moved to Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico on 17 May 1943 and then to Alamogordo Army Airfield in New Mexico on 20 May 1943. The 490th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) was activated at Alamogordo Army Airfield on 5 June 1944 and equipped with B-25 Mitchell bombers. The squadron was redesignated as the 490th Bombardment Wing on 6 July 1944 and reassigned to Ninth AF under First Tactical Bomber Command jurisdiction. The 490 BW flew strategic missions against Japan during World War II, flying both daylight bombing raids and night attacks against enemy military installations. Inactivated at Alamogordo AFB in December 1945. On 16 February 1947, the 490 BW gained a Boeing 727-200 jetliner when it became an element of Strategic Services Unit 11 which operated Boeing 727s for drop operations over Cuba during Operation Mongoose. On 18 March 1947, the 491st BS received its first jet aircraft when it received a Lockheed L-5 Categories from Strategic Services Unit 10 which had been converted from Douglas DC-3s used by Flying Tigers mosquitoes during their campaigns against Japan's Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Inactivated again on 15 August 1949 when all of USAF's bombardment wings were divested due to budgetary concerns following the Korean War but continuedoperation by Strategic Services Unit 11 until its disbanding effective 12 January 1951 without ever conducting combat operations within USAF itself!

The San Francisco Air Force Museum is home to the largest air force gift history in the Bay Area and one of the most comprehensive collections of military memorabilia in North America. The museum has a rich history dating back to World War II, when the United States Air Force established its first base in San Francisco. The museum opened its doors on July 17, 1969, and since then has hosted more than 1 million visitors from all over the world.
San Francisco, California is a city located on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 831,824. The city proper has a population of 781,551, making it the second most populous city in California after Los Angeles. The metropolitan area has a population of 2,415,190 and is now considered one of the largest in North America. The arrival of Europeans in what is now San Francisco began on February 27 by members of Captain Alonzo Hill's party overland from Monterey Peninsula.4 Upon landing at what is now Portsmouth Square near Masonic Hall and Yerba Buena Cove, they erected an adobe wall to prevent Native Americans from raiding their supplies and livestock back east. This first European settlement was called "Fresno," "Salinas," or simply "New Spain." On November 9, 1777 by virtue of his appointment as captain general and commander-in-chief of all forces within New Spain (Mexico), Joaquin de la Vega founded Rancho San Pablo outside what is today downtown San Francisco.5 Over time various other groups increasingly filled up these areas inside and around City Point until there were only a few scattered sites left when General George Rogers Clark arrived with his army during the 1851 invasion that led to California's admission into the United States as part of Mexico as well as its subsequent annexation by Ulysses S. Grant's new country on January 6,. This event finally gave us our name: Californios – people from Northern California – which became familiar throughout much of Silicon Valley where many technology companies were born or have roots dating back to this period including Apple Inc., Google parent company Alphabet Inc., Facebook Inc., Amazon Web Services Inc., Twitter Inc., LinkedIn Corporation and Salesforce Corporation among many others.6
The USAF gifts are a long and varied history. The first gift was given in 1927, when the USAF was founded. In 1849, the United States acquired California from Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area now includes San Francisco, Los Angeles and parts of San Diego and Riverside Counties. The port at Alameda was first established in 1777 as part of Spanish Lomas de Santa Clara by Juan Manuel de Ayala y Tello. In 1846, California became a state within the United States through an act of Congress, and on July 4th, 1850, San Francisco was made the capital of California. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s due to its role as a transportation hub for troops stationed in West Coast cities such as Sacramento and Portland; its status as a financial center with many businesses drawn to its humid climate; and its easy access to water supplies for irrigation purposes. Growth also slowed after World War II when technology outpaced population growth. However, recent economic development has led to increased housing prices and gentrification throughout much of downtownSan Francisco.
In 1849, California was organized as a state from the Mexican Empire. The California Gold Rush began in 1858 and rapid population growth caused San Francisco to become one of the most populous cities on the continent. The city's Chinatown and other Chinese communities were quickly growing, and tensions between the Chinese-American community and Anglo-Americans grew rapidly. In 1906, due to World War I, San Francisco became an open city with no racial discrimination. The city experienced rapid economic growth during the Second World War with its expanding defense industry and new housing developments. Despite these successes, San Francisco's demographics changed rapidly in the 1960s asYAthe gay rights movement swept through the city, leading to increased anti-gay sentiment and vandalism of LGBT businesses.
