The San Francisco Army National Guard is one of the most decorated units in the United States military. The unit has fought in every war since 1846, and its honors include being the first to be mobilized for World War II and winning two Presidential Unit Citations. The unit's history can be traced back to 1846, when the California National Guard was created as part of the United States Military Establishment. The first unit activated was Company D of the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment California Infantry (CAG). It served in various engagements throughout California until December 1861, when it was mustered into service for a tour of duty in Louisiana as part of that state's Confederate army. In 1862, Company D re-activated at Fort Mason under command of Colonel James A. Shields and then retreated to Sacramento where they were absorbed into Battery E of Eleventh Artillery on February 15th 1863. On July 10th 1863, Captain John Sibley led a detachment from Battery E eastward across Fresno County towards Chowchilla Canyon where he took up position with his battery on November 16th 1863 near what is now Tulare Pass during Major General George Buell's attempt to envelop Mexico City from the south. On December 6th 1863 Captain Sibley's battery prevented a Confederate attack against Union forces at Goliad Creek Bridge which resulted in serious casualties for both sides; including Captain Sibley himself who lost his right arm above the elbow and had to retire with his regiment after being wounded three times that day. In 1865, Company D participated inthe Battle of Stockton which ended in an inconclusive victory for Union troops over Confederate forces; however, Captain Sibley sustained severe injuries during this engagement that required him to retire from combat with a permanent loss of hearing and sight: remaining active only as an instructor until his death many years later at age 80 years old. 1/5ths century later on January 26th 2020 Companies A & C reactivated at Fort Mason after 4 year absence due to injury
