Coffee has been a part of the San Francisco landscape for over a hundred years. In 1836, The First National Bank opened in San Francisco and began to serve coffee. Coffee was popularized by Eli Whitney, who started selling coffee beans in New York City in 1847. The first Starbucks store opened in Seattle, Washington in 1976. In addition to young entrepreneurs like Sun Yat-sen and Nathan Sawaya1 who ran businesses within walking distance of each other on Upper Market Street,members of Merchant's Association No. 5 also gave generously for use by their fellow merchants on Montgomery Street between Third and Fourth streets--the same area now occupied by Powell Hotel (1885), Masonic Temple (1906), Battery Park Armory (1914), Howard Johnson's Building (1963) and Marriott Marquis hotel today! This proximity not only allowed individual Merchants Association members access to their fellow merchant customers but also helped build social ties among merchants which persisted until well into the 20th century2-4 . During this time period there was also an increasing focus on quality control which led some business owners eitherto provide employees with special training or simply give them better equipment so they could improve quality control measures5 . In fact, Obadiah Morse donated $100 towards new brewing equipment at Mason’s Brewery6 while George Hearst contributed $2,000 towards improvements at his Cosmopolitan Hotel7 ; both events reflect how important it was for businesses owners to maintain good relationships with their community leaders.(For more information see: “San Francisco Coffee History timelines”) Eli Whitney became known as “The King Of Coffee” thanks largely to his work supplying ground beans directly to stores throughout New York City8 . When he moved his business down below Second Avenue between Houston Street and Broadway in 18509 , he took advantageof what must have been an extremely popular commodity due to his ability sell large quantities at very low prices10 .
