The Marine Corps was founded on April 20, 1866 in San Francisco. The Marines served as an auxiliary force during the California Gold Rush and the Mexican-American War. In World War II, Marines helped fight in numerous campaigns including the Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Today, the Marine Corps is a premier military service and provides personnel to serve in a variety of roles worldwide. Marines have been deployed throughout history as part of various conflicts and missions. Their service has been praised for its heroism, determination, and dedication. A large number of Marines have also received awards for their bravery and heroism including the Medal of Honor, Navy Crosses, Purple Hearts, and four Soldier’s Medals. In San Francisco today there are more than 12 marine corps sites active with troops performing garrison duty or Deployment Readiness Training (DRT). This includes two amphibious assault ships USS Golden Gate (LPH 9) which is homeported at Pier 59 naval shipyard in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – Portsmouth Naval District; USS Coral Sea (LHD 6) which is based at Hunters Point Racecourse; three Landing Craft Utilitycraft landing units LCL 3 Dock 1 Bay Bridge Landing Unit LCR 4 Bay Bridge/Hollywood Beach Landing Unit Light Infantry company LLI 2nd Battalion 5th Marines stationed at Fort Mason; one Aviation squadron F/A-18E Super Hornets from Moffett Field Air Reserve Base located adjacent to Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst; one battalion Headquarters & Services Detachment support unit HQ&SD detachment Kilo Company Combat Service Support Battalion 8th Marine Regiment dedicated to counterdrug operations within Central America's banana republics - Manuel Noriega's Nicaragua; two artillery batteries mortars Battery CMC #1 (6 Rounds each) Battery MWR #4(8 Rounds each) Battery ECHO VLR-2(2 rounds per gun per minute), respectively attached to III Amphibious Force Southern Command's Camp Pendleton waterfront location There are now over 1 million marines serving around the world with Regular Marine infantry battalions activated here in San Francisco only recently reactivating old convoys past Alcatraz Island all the way back up through September 2009 when they reopened up at Hunters Point after being closed since 1994 due to asbestos removal works conducted by then PG&E contractor Citizens Contractors Incorporated Now that those days seem like ancient history let’s take a look back at some where things began for this community that so many children learn about on “The History Channel” It all started back on April 20th when Sergeant First Class John Hebert enlisted into Company D from Stockton County California just north of Sacramento Hebert would later become known as one of America’s most decorated marines ever awarded both Medal Of Honor posthumously as well as five Navy Crosses for his actions during engagements such as Iwo Jima against Japanese forces including his first battle where he was wounded prior to leading his unit into action later earning himself another Navy Cross following Okinawa campaign But it wasn't until he became embedded with Company D aboard HMS " necessities" while deployed off Samaritan Islands early 1945 that Hebert truly found success within his unit becoming someone who could be counted upon no matter what situation arose His Captain ordered him onto shore leave when they discovered an airfield had been bombed earlier that day while ashore rather than risk anymore casualties embarked upon what would become known as Operation Neptune Spear resulting in heavy losses onboard HMS "necessities" but not before saving scores of other sailors lives along side him this eventful engagement none less resulting Him finally getting recognition from President Franklin D Roosevelt who presented him with The George Washington Award posthumously once again makinghim one step closer towards ultimate fame alongside World War II veterans Chuck Wagoner and James Mattis who were also given awards posthumously for their services

In 1851, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel James Buchanan as the first governor of California. Buchanan issued a proclamation declaring San Francisco Bay “the most important harbor on the Pacific Coast” and announced plans fora city there. A group of investors led by John Dallenbach started building what would become Oakland into a thriving town. By 1861, when Californians earned their independence from Mexico, they had founded Sacramento as their new capital.
