The San Francisco National Guard was organized on November 17, 1853 as a result of the California Gold Rush. The Guard was first stationed at Fort Point on the Golden Gate Bridge. On December 12, 1853, the National Guard became present in City Hall when Mayor Antonio Castellanos officially recognized them with a flagstaff. On February 14, 1854, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the creation of four infantry brigades under General James Ewell Ellis to be organized into a national guard force and serve until 1906. In 1934, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill No. 942 which created an aviation corps within the National Guardsmen and also authorized issuance of medals for patriotism and service to country. Medals were introduced by then-Governor Earl Warren who said " military men are a special breed that have done so much for our state and its people." Medals were designed by sculptor Edward Munch who had been commissioned to make two similar designs - one featuring an eagle clutching an olive branch in its talons while another shows three gold stars around a blue field - both badges honoring heroism in World War I or Desert Campaigns (1917-1918) during which San Francisco took part. After passage of Senate Bill No. 942 it became effective on July 1, 1935 and all members of the National Guard received their medals immediately upon joining up including officers if they had not already received them from previous campaigns or deployments elsewhere in the United States or abroad). Air Marshal John Fenton Macdonald flew his first combat mission over China against Japanese forces using fighter planes provided by Army Air Service pilots flying out of McCook Field near Dayton Ohio on October 25th 1945; thus starting America's involvement in World War II following Pearl Harbor . Earl Warren proclaimed August 15th 1946 as "National Defense Day" in commemoration of this momentous event; thus beginning what would become known as The Golden Age Of San Francisco's National Guard

The National Guard of San Francisco is a unit of the United States military and has been in existence since 1861. The first national guard units were raised in California during the Mexican-American War, with troops mobilized to help suppress violence. In 1871, the California National Guard was redesignated as the San Francisco National Guard. The first modern day Commanding General of the National Guard was Lt. Colonel John Espey from 1962-1970, who also served as Commander of Joint Task Force Bay Area from 1974-1976. From 1978-1987, Major General James Larkin led the unit when it was renamed as Brigade Combat Team 1st Battalion ( Infantry) before becoming divisional commander in 1987 and retiring in 1992.
In 1849, when California became a United States Territory, the first inhabitants of San Francisco were Spanish soldiers who founded the Presidio of San Francisco in 1776. The following year, Englishman John F. Montgomery arrived and began trading with the natives. In 1851, American Commodore David Dixon Porter landed his squadron on Golden Gate Island to attack Mexico City from a distance and discovered that the city was under occupation by Mexican forces. The situation was so dangerous that Porter decided to retreat and leave Americans to deal with the Mexicans. The city's growth continued as more settlers arrived until it reached its current population of over 700,000 people in 1875. After years of struggle against Native Americans who had occupied parts of San Francisco for centuries, white settlement started in earnest during the 1850s due to growing business opportunities created by new transportation methods such as steamboats and railways. During this time, also known as "The Gold Rush", many famous Californians such as John F again made their mark on history including Sutter (the founder of Sacramento),Richardson (president of Leland Stanford Jr.'s railroad company) and timber baron Joseph Brownell (founder of Palo Alto). With new arrivals came new social trends which quickly led to violence and instability withinSan Fransisco. On December 28th 1856 two men named George Kelly & Antonio Villaraigosa shot at each other near Bush Street after an argument about property rights; one man died from his wounds while the other was captured alive by Mexican authorities and held hostage for ransom before being released unharmed a few weeks later. This event is considered one of the earliest examples of lawlessness in San Francisco which would lead to increased crime rates in subsequent decades Cities like New York City or Chicago experienced far greater waves of immigration during this period but no major outbreaks or riots took place withinSanFrancisco until after World War II when Italian-Americans paramilitaries operating outof Alcatraz attacked Japanese-American residents living peacefully on Haight Street
