The city was bombed by Japanese bombers, and part of the damage done was to USS Hornet class battleship USS Constitution Museum which had been moored at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard on Treasure Island. After being repaired, Constitution sailed for her next deployment on October 1st 1945 bound for Japan via Pearl Harbor. That same day, Lieutenant Commander John Sutter relieved Captain James Waddell as commanding officer of USS Constitution Museum after serving under him since 1939 when he joined the 7th Fleet at Seattle and later served aboard Lexington Battlecruiser Squadron from 1942-45 while based at Yokosuka Naval Base In Shimonoseki Prefecture This event marked not only US Navy presence in California but also change within San Francisco City government as Citizen’s Committee organized relief effort for shipwrecked sailors and their families Ended 194 years of Japanese Occupation

Despite this tragedy, SF prospered as a rapidly growing Californian metropolis with a thriving financial district that remains today one of its most vibrant areas.
