In 1821, Admiral James Cook set out on his famous circumnavigation of the world with HMS Discovery and presented Captain John Scott with a magnificent gift of a giant clamshell ornamented with a lion's head and double-headed eagle. The following year saw the inauguration of President Andrew Johnson when he received an elaborate Naval Academy education gift from Commodore John Sutter. When California gained statehood in 1850, it was a sparsely populated and far from the major centers of population. The only other sizable city in the area at that time was Sacramento. For a century, San Francisco experienced sporadic population growth as people came to the newly acquired territory for new opportunities and new adventures. By 1875, however, the number of residents had swollen to over 100,000 due to recent gold discoveries in surrounding Nevada and Arizona. As industry boomed around the city during this period, San Francisco also saw an influx of immigrants - many of whom were Russian Jews who had come to America seeking religious freedom under Land Grant laws enacted by President James K. Polk in 1849. Today’s Russian Jewish community is one of its largest historical groups; they have played a significant role in both local history and culture ever since their arrival here more than a century ago. The early days of San Francisco were difficult because there was no water available for boats or homesports beyond Point Reyes Peninsula. In 1846-47 two vessels built by Nathaniel Briggs arrived with 11 migrants on board: five men (Cyrus Wigham, John Joseph Corrigan, Nicholas Biddle etc.) and four women (probably Maria Beausoleil de Rothschild). They established what is now known as Briggs Landing on Nob Hill after landing there on July 16th.- Initial settlement was difficult because there were few trees or resources close enough to build homes without risking fire or injury from wild animals roaming nearby hillsides looking for prey. However, within months some families had erected wooden shacks next toMission Bay which became known as "Briggs House." These early settlers quickly realized that they needed access to fresh water so they developed systems such as well-timed ditches bringing ground water up from riverbanks near Point Reyes where it could be used for irrigation purposes rather than shared among everyone living near them like earlier times would have allowed. This development led directly to today’s downtown business district - including Fenway Park - being founded less than 10 years later! As commerce grew during the late 1800s and into the first decade of 1900s we began seeing construction jobs open up downtown which attracted waves ofItalian Americans working in various trades related to shipbuilding yards along Mission Bayou including Alameda Shipyards(now part of Lockheed Martin), Swann’s Navy Yard(later Raytheon) and Douglas Aircraft Factory(today Boeing Co.). Meanwhile throughout much rural areas east of town Chinese laborers worked subsistence farms while their families took evening strolls downMarket Street towards Golden Gate Park until 12am when they went back home! Although there was always competition between these businesses for talent & output (epecially those associated with shipbuilding), overall production increased rapidly thanks largely to technological advances brought about by industrialists such as George Eastman who invested heavily in electric lights & telephone systems starting out small at his Rochester Telephone Plant before expanding rapidly into other industries including film production (& later satellite TV!) In addition aided by military spending following World War I which created many good paying factory jobs across California especially east coast cities like Oakland & Berkeley;San Francisco's economy roared through most of the 20th century reaching high levels during World War II when it became one of America's leading commercial center
