From there, the small businesses grew and multiplied until they became quite large. Today, small batch coffee is a mainstay in the San Francisco cultural landscape. Small batch coffee is a brewing method that uses small batches of coffee to produce a high quality product. Coffee is brewed by placing small amounts of water, beans, and chemicals in a pot and leaving it to steep for a set amount of time. The desired result is the release of flavor and aroma from the beans while preserving their nutrients. Coffee has been around since before humans were on Earth. In fact, some believe that coffee was actually grown on Mars! The first evidence of coffee being brewed on Earth came from an inscription found at Teotihuacan in Mexico which reads "the drink which we make with our own hands." Coffee began to be cultivated in Africa about two thousand years ago and eventually reached India about four hundred years ago. The first mention of espresso comes from Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci who wrote in his journal during his travels in South America that he had tasted "a strong drink made with roasted beans." Smallbatch coffee has exploded over the last few decades because it allows for more control over each step in the brewing process- from roasting to grinding to drinking. When done correctly, small batch coffee produces rich flavors with minimal waste. In fact, some people even claim that smallbatch coffee tastes better than bigbatch because there are less distractions caused by ample roast time or lack thereof. Small batch coffees can also be very versatile- they can be used as Diedrich Kupfer dark roast or Guatemalan Sumatra Bemberg blend coffees for example. In 1847, a group of farmers in San Francisco began to produce coffee. The beans were roasted on small-scale and sold at local markets. In 1912, the first large-scale roasting plant was established in San Francisco by the Dutch Coffee Company.

The City of San Francisco was founded on October 29, 1776 by Spanish colonists from Alta California under Captain Gaspar de Portolá. In 1821, during California's Mexican-American War, General Mariano Vallejo claimed part of present-day San Francisco for Mexico at what is now known as Mission Dolores. Commodore John Doolittle landed his unit at Stockton on April 20, 1821 to establish Fort Point at Yerba Buena Cove during California's Gold Rush. In 1848, part of Rancho Pastoria del Río de la Salle was acquired by José Joaquin Alvarado who named it after his father Don Jose Antonio Alvarado y Costilla. As early as 1851, several buildings were built near Potrero Hill on University Avenue: First Baptist Church (now Holy Cross Presbyterian Church), Second Baptist Church (now First Unitarian church), and Christ Episcopal Cathedral were built in what is now North Beach and Nob Hill areas respectively. On December 20th1851 Californian Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "The Grapes Of Wrath" while living at 527 Geary Street in today's Union Square On June 27th1852 James Wickersham purchased land east side of Market Street from Juan Castro for $2 per acre which included some current day areas including Haight Ashbury and Dogpatch neighborhoods On November 7th1853 Wickersham added much more territory when he purchased an additional 800 acres east side of Market Street from José Joaquín Moraga for $15 per acre which included parts southwestof Golden Gate Bridge

Small batch coffee has a long and varied history. As coffee became more popular, small-batch brewers emerged to provide quality beans at a lower cost. One of the earliest small batch brewers was The French Press Coffee Company, which began production in 1916 in an old printing house in downtown Philadelphia. In the early days of small batch brewing, most of the beans were roasted by hand. Today, many small batch brewers use automated roasting and packaging systems to reduce labor costs and produce high-quality coffee at a fraction of the price. Some smaller breweries even operate as cooperatives, sharing resources and profits among themselves so that they can continue producing high-quality coffee at a low cost for their customers.

After various failures at governance, in 1852 President Fillmore signed an act creating what is now San Francisco County as part of California.
