During World War II, Bombardment troops played an essential role both overseas and at home; they flew many types of airplanes including Boeing B-17H Flying Fortresses into battle against Hitler’s forces; these aircraft were some of the most powerful weapons ever created and helped turn the tide against Nazi aggression. After World War II ended, our airport underwent several renovations including construction of runways long enough for jet planes to land and take off; this allowed us to become one of America’s leading regional airports handling traffic from Los Angeles County up through Phoenix and Tucson Arizona! In 1957 we opened our doors tothe public once again becomingSAN GABRIEL AIRPORT! We continue to serve our community today by providing passenger service on both local and international airlines as well as infrastructure improvements such as new runway systems and expanded parking areas!

The San Gabriel Valley Air National Guard's 133rd Airlift Wing was established on 1 July 1947 in the town of Monterey Park, California. It is one of four airlift wings in the California Air National Guard. The wing flew C-47s and DC-3s into support of military operations in both World War II and the Korean War. In 1969, the 133rd Airlift Wing became an independent wing when it was redesignated as the 133d Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES) with responsibility for providing medical evacuation services for Federal Aviation Administration employees and their families. In 1990, AES was redesignated as a multi-mission aeromedical squadron when it became responsible for providing Joint United States mission criticalmedical evacuations from various locations worldwide including Afghanistan, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Somalia. On 9/11/2001, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, three hundred ninety-eight people were evacuated from hijacked planes over Los Angeles County using AES aircraft and helicopters. This was the first time AES aircraft had been used to evacuate civilians since its inception seventy years earlier.
San Gabriel Valley is located in Southern California and occupies a valley that runs from the Angeles National Forest to the Stanislaus River. The population of San Gabriel Valley was estimated at 315,824 in 2000, making it the third-largest city in Los Angeles County. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse regions in California. The major economic activities are agriculture, manufacturing, and service sectors. There are also concentrations of people of Hispanic descent as well as Asians and African Americans. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Gabriel Valley were cattle ranchers who traveled through this area on their way to missions in central California. In 1848, Mexican soldiers took over Rancho Santa Fe de la Alameda from some Englishman named John Sutter and his family. The grantees were mainly Mexicans who had been brought over by Mexico during its time of independence from Spain. From this rancho there began a period of rapid growth for San Gabriel Valley because it became accessible to shipping on the Sonoma Strait and several other waterways due to new land grants given out by Governor Pico Toqui y Salinas during his tenure in 1851-55. The largest employer within town limits was tobacco farming which continued into the 20th century; however, with greatly increased production throughout much of California, tobacco farming has declined significantly in significance within recent decades. During World War II local industries produced munitions for both American and Japanese forces; however, many plant closures followed after Pearl Harbor made these plants unprofitable and led to a decline in jobs downtown during wartime years when trade occurred largely between Lubbock (west) and Pasadena (east). In 1865, when Yosemite National Park was completed east of downtown Los Angeles after years of work by local volunteers and donations from eastern Californians under Federal auspices (the USGS had been mapping and photographing Yosemite for decades), much interest arose among visitors about exploring one or all but undiscovered portions west of Interstate 5 along both sides of the watershed separating Mono Lake from Yosemite National Park! The first European to visit San Gabriel was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1802, and became a part of the Mexican Empire. In 1821, it became an Anglo-American joint venture named Alhambra, after the city of Granada, Spain. San Gabriel lost its independence from Mexico in 1847 and from California in 1850. It became a city on July 4, 1870. The population reached 178,000 by 1890. The City Council established public schools and libraries in 1886. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district on November 15, 1906; however, the rebuilt district included many new businesses and art galleries that continue to thrive today.
