The California Army National Guard has been providing security and support to the local community in San Gabriel for over sixty years. The Guard's Deployed Gift History can be traced back to World War II when soldiers from both sides of the conflict donated items such as food, clothing, and war memorabilia to help feed and clothe the locals. Today, the San Gabriel Valley is home to one of the largest military populations in Southern California. The city of San Gabriel is located in the County of Alameda, within the U.S. state of California. The population was 34,007 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is bordered by Pasadena to the east, Inglewood to the west, and Carson City to the northwest. San Gabriel has a rich history dating back to 1869 when it was founded as a small agricultural community by Mexican Americans on land concession from Governor Pancho Villa. The town grew quickly due to its fertile soil and good infrastructure for farming and milling products such as flour, cottonseed oil, rice, onions, garlic, chili peppers and other vegetables. In 1924 San Gabriel became an independent city with a mayor-council form of government under an act passed by Congress following investigations into graft in municipal governments across America. In 1935 it became one of twenty-six cities in Southern California incorporated under legislation approved by then Speaker of the United States House Joe Cannon (D-CA). During World War II San Gabriel played host to many American military bases including The Far East Air Force Base which housed Japanese forces during World War II; Camp Roberts which served as a tactical airfield during engagements against Japan; and Carpenter Elementary School which sheltered Allied troops during their retreat from Japan before surrendering on September 2 1945.

In 1871, San Gabriel was founded as a small town in the county of Los Angeles by Anglo-Americans. The town quickly grew and became a major center for ranching and farming. In the 1920s, San Gabriel became one of Southern California's most rapidly growing cities, thanks to its proximity to the oil fields and other industries that surrounded LA. By the late 1940s, however, rapid population growth had caused infrastructure problems and traffic congestion in downtown San Gabriel. In 1969, Mayor Gilberto Urquhart announced the creation of the city limits of San Gabriel which extended from Canoga Park Boulevard south to Alameda Street; this new boundary helped keep downtown streets clear and minimized crosswalk collisions. The city experienced several significant moments during its history: on January 15, 1984, Mayor Gilberto Urquhart proclaimed "San Gabriel Day" in honor of all who have made contributions to San Gabriel over the years; on December 2nd, 1993–the 50th anniversary of valley fire –San Gorgonio Canyon was officially renamed Santa Anita National Park due to congressional passage of Publius 19–a bill providing funding for park development; and finally on November 27th, 2006 –the 50th anniversary of City Hall being moved from downtown to Northview Avenue –an event attended by then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa resulted in the restoration of much older portions of downtown including Old City Hall (now City Hall Annex).
The area now known as San Gabriel Valley was first populated by the Tongva people, who grew crops and hunted game in the region. Missionaries arrived in 1821, and by 1835, the mission of Santa Clara had been established in what is now downtown San Gabriel. The valley became a part of Mexico following the Mexican–American War (1848-1849) and was annexed by California in 1850. In 1853, the new state of Alameda was founded within San Gabriel Valley and it would grow to become one of California's most populous counties. After years of growth and development, the city of Los Angeles became an important center for finance and industry during the 20th century.
