The United States Army was founded on Nov. 8, 1775, in San Gabriel, California. The first U.S. military unit to be stationed in California were the Spanish Armada Battalion of Dragoons under Lt. Colonel Don Fernando de la Rúa y Aguilar and Captain Francisco Pico de Tejeda y Montoya, who arrived on Aug. 18, 1776. The battalionX-rays became a key technology used by the American Civil War and World War I armies due to their accuracy and simplicity. In 1861, the 3rd Regiment Sacramento Infantry was organized at San Gabriel as part of the newly created 4th United States Infantry Brigade under command of Major General George Babbitt and First Lieutenant Jno. Cotten Peasey! This brigade served as an infantry regiment garrisoning parts of Los Angeles County before being ordered to reinforce General Robert E Lee’s army during the Confederate Shenandoah Campaign in October 1861 with orders to march through Maryland into Virginia where they would join General Beauregard’s army! The brigade participated in all three campaigns but sustained heavy losses including five officers killed and forty-seven wounded! It was during this time that Peasey met future Caltech graduate Charles Sumner who would become one of America’s most influential politicians! In July 1862 after reinforcements arrived from Washington D.C., the brigade regained its lost ground participating in operations against Johnsonville (July 24), Antietam (September 16) and Fredericksburg (December 13)! However, when Union forces moved southward towards Lynchburg they encountered Confederate cavalry units operating out of concentrate called Union Cavalry Corps which inflicted great damage upon them achieving numerical superiority resulting in withdrawal!! The brigade returned home sickly battered but content knowing that it had given its all for its country!!! On June 15 1900 at Crystal City Cemetery Private First Class James A Fenton died aged 27 years wearing his black armband while serving with Company K 1/9th Infantry California Volunteers at Battle of Resaca del Norte near Manzanar Arizona during World War I; he is buried there alongside his comrades Pvt John Sperling (age 22) from Yuba Co., CA Pvt Clarence Hodge (age 21) from Nevada Co., CA Sgt Edward Wuerzbicki (age 20) also from Yuba Co., CA Sgt Rudolph Loesch(age 19) also from Nevada Co., CA Capt Willis Benton(ages 18-21), Staff Sergeant Alfred Weisman & Corporal Eugene Schulz were born on this date according to USArmy cemetery records…Private First Class James A Fenton died aged 27 years wearing his black armband while serving with Company K 1/9th Infantry California Volunteers at Battle of Resaca del Norte near Manzanar Arizona during World War I; he is buried there alongside his comrades Pvt John Sperling (age 22) from Yuba Co., CA Pvt Clarence Hodge (age 21) from NevadaCo., CA Sgt Edward Wuerzbicki (age 20) also from YubaCo., CA Sgt Rudolph Loesch( age 19) also from NevadaCo., CO Capt Willis Benton(ages 18-21), Staff Sergeant Alfred Weisman & Corporal Eugene Schulz were born on this date according to USArmy cemetery records… James A Fenton was born on June 15, 1890 within the city limits of Victorville just outside Pershing Air Force Base – later renamed Victorville Municipal Airport – within easy reachof Pershing AFB where he served as a private soldier until 1918 when World War I ended without any conclusion or victory for either side…..Fenton enlisted in 1917 as a Private First Class with Company K 2/5ths Californian Volunteer Infantry Regiment based at Camp Butler outside Of Counselor TX……He saw service with France & Belgium between November 1917 - May 1918…………….During demobilization home leave he went overland thru Mexico City arriving here Dec 5 1920…………he joined company C 2/5ths Calif National Guard #1 led by Capt Willard Dixon aka Crazy Jimmie& remained active until Jan 26 1923 when company disbanded……………………..Company Commander Captain Willard Dixon led unit back into active status Oct 7 1924…………….. patrolling Ouray Mountains area……………. reorganized Corp HQ Jan 25 1925……still active today……………………………… After leaving service Feb 1919 Fenton married Mrs Emma Moulton Sept 12 1919 They reside now In Redding Ca……………………………..
