There is no doubt that coffee has been a part of the San Gabriel Valley for as long as people have been living there. The first written record of coffee being grown in this area is from 1821, when Captain Fenton and his party explored the area and brought back seeds of the bean. Coffee was grown in small plots until it became an important commodity in California after gold was discovered in 1848. The first commercial plantations were started around 1850, and by 1865, over two million pounds of beans were being exported from San Gabriel Valley. The popularity of coffee has only continued to grow since then, with people all over the world enjoying its rich flavor and unique history. In San Gabriel Valley, we appreciate the importance of our local crop and continue to produce some of the best-quality coffee available anywhere.

Coffee was first brought to San Gabriel Valley in 1887 by German immigrants. A coffee house opened in 1907 and the town's first grocery store was founded in 1911. The Santa Fe Railroad passed through San Gabriel in 1925 and made it easier for people to get to downtown Los Angeles. In 1939, a new shopping center called the Square was built on what is now the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Nighthawk Drive. The original shopping mall closed in 1984, but its anchors – Sears, JCPenney, Macy's – remain in operation today.
San Gabriel, California is a small city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 126,500 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and it is bordered by downtown Los Angeles to the north, Glendale to the east, West Covina to the south and Lynwood to the west. The ZIP code for San Gabriel is 91712. The first permanent resident in San Gabriel was John Crespo who arrived in 1847 from Mexico. He founded what would become known as "The Presidio" which included today's downtown area, today's Mission District and much of El Monte Village including parts of Glencoe and Midvale. In 1849 Mexican settlers arrived from Baja California with their families and constructed Mission San Gabriel Arcangela near present-day Uptown LAX Airport. In 1853 Humboldt County was created from part of Orange County when that county joined with Los Angeles County; during this time, San Gabriel became part of Humboldt County. On February 15th, 1871 an act were passed by Congress creating Riverside County which included most of what is now Southern California along with land that had been donated by Mexico including present day Pasadena and other areas in southern LA county (the northern border being at Griffith Park). On October 14th 1928 a tornado touched down just outside town destroying many homes but no people were injured or killed due to this natural disaster which remains one of America's most beloved stories

The city of San Gabriel, California was founded in 1871 by James G. Blount and his wife Elizabeth. It became a thriving community with its own schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses. The city prospered until the 1906 earthquake destroyed many of its buildings. The city rebuilt quickly and began to grow again. In 1915 it merged with neighboring Angeles City to form a new municipality called Los Angeles County. The two cities continued to operate as separate municipalities but were eventually combined into one municipality in 2000. Today, San Gabriel is one of the most vibrant communities in Los Angeles County and has an active economy that depends on medical technology, aerospace manufacturing, information technology, professional services, and retail commerce. Its residents are highly respected for their civic activism and commitment to public service.
The first people to live in the area now known as San Gabriel County were the Tongva, a Native American tribe. The Mission San Gabriel was founded in 1776 by fray Jose de Rizal and his brother Francisco Xavier. The mission was destroyed by fire in 1871, but rebuilt and served as a center for missionary work until it closed its doors in 1891. In 1892, San Gabriel County was created from parts of Los Angeles County.
