By 1860, there were 6,000 people living in San Gabriel and it had become one of the most important centers for industry and trade in southern California. With its booming economy came social unrest which led to several exciting events including the overthrow of Mayor José Gomez y Heredia on October 1st 1861 by a mob led by Antonio Garza who called themselves The Angels or "Granados". This event marked an important turning point forSan Gabriel as it became an open society where citizens could express their views without fear of retribution from powerful businessmen or political officials. During this time period, many prominent figures were born or raised here such as Governor Manuel Michelini (1861-1865) and Assemblyman Lorenzo Snowe (1907-1911). Other notable natives include Dr. John Muir (1863-1938), author Wuthering Heights (1847), singer/actor Gene Kelly (1920-1995) and Mayor Emilio Huerta (1945-1946). As America transitioned into a more modern era during World War II, San Gabriel became a key target due to its strategic location within easy reach of military barracks located throughout Southern California along I-5 corridor. On December 15th 1941, Japanese bombers bombed Pearl Harbor destroying much valuable civilian infrastructure including churches, hotels and factories within minutes of each other leaving little hope for civilians caught inside any buildings situated close to ground zero; this included residential areas such as San Gabriel where nearly 50% of all residents lived within two miles of Ground Zero according to local historian Donny Youngbloods book "A Shattered Heart: History & Memory Of Los Angeles County During World War II". Munitions dumps were established throughout southern California during this time period resulting in extensive destruction both nearground and underground making it difficult for locals living nearby not only during wartime but also postwar years thereafter; these munitions dumps continue up until present day with various names such as - Skyline Arsenal Ammunition Storage Facility(SAACON), Antelope Valley armory ammunition storage facility(AVASF), Palmdale armory ammunition storage facility(PALMDaleAmmunitionStorage Facility), etc.. After Japan's surrender following World War II ending hostilities across Asiaans Pacific Theater on September 2nd 1945 SAN GABRIEL CITY HAD THE MAYOR'S OFFICE COMPLETELY DESTROYED IN A FIRE THAT ESCAPED FROM AN ARMORY LAWN MOWER WHICH WAS ON THE BACK OF A TRUCK FULFILMENT OF ORDER NOVEMBER 1945 BY JUAN URQUERA SAN GABRIEL CITY COUNCIL PLANS TO REPLACE THE MAYOR WITH HIS OWN PERSONNEL AFTER PUBLIC NOTICE AND CONSULTATION WITH OTHER CITIES INCLUDING LOS ANGELES
In 1871, the first railroad was built through San Gabriel Valley, connecting Los Angeles with Pasadena and other towns in the valley. The town of San Gabriel was founded by Mexicans who had fled to California from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In1878, a branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad was completed through the valley and San Gabriel became an important rail junction. The population of San Gabriel grew rapidly in the early 20th century, reaching 200 people by 1910. However, economic development stagnated in the late 19th century and during World War I (1914-1918), many businesses closed down due to military production or prohibition policies. In 1925,CHP began operations through San Gabriel Valley and rapid growth followed as passengers increased from 5,000 to 25,000 per month by 1930. The CHP system helped develop new areas such as Monterey Park and Eagle Rock while also providing service to Long Beach and Ventura County. During World War II (1945-1946), local industries were used to produce munitions for the war effort; however, most of these businesses failed after sanctions were placed on Japan following that country's defeat in 1945. After World War II ended, social changes gripped sanGabriel Valley as automobiles became more popular than trains; however, numerous small businesses continued to operate until about 1970 when Automotive Manufacturing Company went bankrupt due to a lack of competition from foreign automakers. As recently as 1979 there were still a few small businesses operating withinSanGabrielValley despite abundant technological advances which have destroyed most traditional livelihoods throughout much of southern California
