San Gabriel is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 81,146 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Los Angeles County after Culver City. The first people to live in what is now San Gabriel were the Tongva/Gabriel Mission Indians who arrived there in 1821. In 1835, Rancho San Pedro de la Palma was granted to José Maria Morelos by Governor Pio Pico. The mission was abandoned in 1842 and most of its lands were patented to others soon afterwards. In 1871, Agustín Castro purchased part of Rancho San Pedro de la Palma from José María Obregon for $20,000 cash and built the first adobe house on the site which he named "Castro". By 1888 about 140 dwellings had been erected there including 26 schools and 30 churches. A fire destroyed much of downtown San Gabriel on December 6th, 1889 (the day After Christmas). For years it was thought that this fire had started intentionally by one or more individuals who desired to injure or destroy property within town limits; however no evidence has been found to support this allegation up until today. On October 15th 1897 Anselmo Lomas bought all of Lots 1 through 5 in District 7 of Pasadena for $1 million dollars from Adolphus Busch & Co., a German brewer who had organized a drive throughout Southern California to collect money for building new chapels and other Catholic church structures. This purchase crippled Busch's business as well as putting an end to his ambitions of becoming America's largest landowner since Mexico accomplishments during its Mexican War period (1898-1901). On March 3rd 1899 Electa Haggerty married George Cairoli at Stations Church near Claremont Boulevard in Pasadena after long court proceedings which began on November 4th 1895 when she became Mrs George Cairoli following their engagement on February 11th 1896 following six months of courtship while he served time for beating her father with a truck engine while driving between vineyards near Fresno and Lancaster County . They would have two children: Ada Mae born January 17th 1901 and George Edward born May 2nd 1903 although Ada Mae would eventually die before she could attend college age due to a neural tube defect caused by blunt force trauma from being thrown off a wagon while riding with her mother when she was just six weeks old
