San Gabriel is a small city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 127,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and bordered by Beverly Hills to the east, West Hollywood to the south and Lancaster Avenue to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Gabriel were soldiers from Spain who led an expedition into what is now Orange County in 1769. In 1871, land sales began for what would become San Gabriel Valley and soon enough village form around it with farmersgrowing grapes, almonds and other crops while merchants sold goods such as cloth, shoes and groceries. Iron ore was discovered in 1886 but no development took place until 1907 when San Gabriel valley became one of six areas served by Carlsbad Caverns National Park after being purchased by Congress from George Hearst for $10 million dollars! In 1923 following World War II American troops moved into nearby Palmdale during Operation Crossroads which changed local demographics significantly with many people moving out of town into new housing developments that are still visible today including Canyon Crest Estates & Rancho Palmdale (now known as Crescent Heights).
