San Gabriel is located in southern Los Angeles County, California. The city was founded on October 25, 1871 by Antonio Irrieta and his brother José. On July 15, 1957, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck California; it left over 150 people dead or missing and caused $30 million (USD) in damage statewide. The quake also triggered a major fire that destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in east Los Angeles County alone. The following year saw further redevelopment activity when Northridge Oil Company began producing oil at the now defunct El Segundo refinery onshore from downtown San Gabriel City limits. This activity led to increased traffic congestion on State Route 5 along Interstate 10 near the refinery site; starting in 1958 SR-5 was routed via Sepulveda Boulevard instead through town center to avoid this bottleneck
