The city of San Gabriel, California was first populated in 1871 by Mexican Americans who had come to the area during the Gold Rush. The city was named after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who partook in the Mexican War of 1849-1850 and lost his life at the hands of American forces. After Santa Anna's death, his widow donated land to be used for a settlement. In 1872, San Gabriel was incorporated as a town. The population grew rapidly from its early years and by 1907, it had reached 100,000 people. The city's annexation into Los Angeles County in 1911 made San Gabriel one of the largest cities in Southern California. In 1871, San Gabriel Valley was part of Mexico as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. The treaty ceded most of California to the United States and established U.S. residency in what is now Los Angeles County. The area that would become San Gabriel Valley was first populated by Native Americans, who were hunter-gatherers and gathered firewood near present-day Chatsworth and Montrose Avenues. In 1879, a group of Englishmen named Minesdale purchased Rancho Santa Fe de la Salle from Carlos Bocanegra and began to develop it into a sheep ranch. In 1886, John Sutter discovered gold in the valley and soon became its largest landowner. Over time, other discoveries led to an increase in population in San Gabriel Valley; by 1909, there were over 100 people living there. On January 8, 1912, representatives from twenty-five American Cities met at Laughlin Ranch to discuss plans for a new interstate highway system connecting Chicago with points east via the coastal state of California. This meeting marked the beginning of what would be known as the " Interstate Highway System". The original route proposed by Representative Harold Ickes (D-Oklahoma) included State Route 5 (now US 101) through San Gabriel Valley and down into Pasadena; however this proposal was scrapped due to objections from local property owners who felt they had been shortchanged on their share of money set aside for the project. In 1964, following passage of Proposition 65 which banned smoking inside public places in Los Angeles County, some businesses decided to close their doors because they could no longer afford not to have smokers inside their establishments. This decision helped spark a major redevelopment effort in downtown Los Angeles which saw many historic buildings restored or renovated includingargon classic theaters like Regal Cinemas which reopened after conversion into movie theaters designed specifically for screening PG/13 movies such as Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen . The redevelopment has also led to new construction such as Staples Center – home now to both LA Lakers and Kings basketball teams –and nearby One Hollywood Drive where mixed use development has replaced single family homes dating back to when Southern Californians still relied heavily on agriculture for their income
