It also produces dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. The city has several parks including Mount Wilson Park which overlooks Downtown Los Angeles; Northridge Park; South Pasadena Park; La Brea Tar Pits Park; Azusa Hills Open Space Preserve; Willowbrook Wildlife Preserve and numerous others within walking or biking distance of each other

Because it lay near Los Angeles, population growth helped make San Gabriel one of the most important cities in Southern California. It became a charter member of the City Council in 1912 and then Mayor in 1928. During World War II,San Gabriel played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions output throughout Southern California. As housing prices soared during the late 1990s and early 2000s however, many residents chose to move out to other parts of Southern California or away from downtownLos Angeles altogether. Today, only a few remnant businesses remain within downtownSan Gabriel and much has changed since then including gentrification which has led to increased crime rates and displacement among low-income residents who have found themselves pushed out into nearby neighborhoods
The first Europeans to visit San Gabriel Valley were the Gaspar de Portolà group of Franciscan friars on July 4, 1769. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in 1829 by Father José Gomez. The mission is now a part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In 1853, Don Isaac Obregon donated land for the construction of an American military hospital in what is now downtown Los Angeles. In 1907, portions of what are today Downtown L.A., Eagle Rock and Sylmar were annexed to the City of Los Angeles; they became known as North Hollywood and East Hollywood, respectively. In 1951, Santa Anita Park was opened as a horse racing track and then converted into an amusement park with roller coasters, water parks and other attractions over time. It closed in 1984 after numerous accidents at the track killed dozens of people and injured many more.
