In 1846, the United States Army was founded and San Jacinto became its first post. The army garrisoned San Jacinto for several years before it moved out in 1851. Over the next hundred years, military activity in this area increased as various wars and conflicts took place. In 1932, the US Congress passed an act that designated San Jacinto National Monument. This event marked a turning point for the community as it began to become known for its military history. The current state of the army garrison is a result of both active duty and inactive duty soldiers residing in San Jacinto. Active duty soldiers are responsible for keeping the community safe while on deployment; however, they also provideneeded support to local businesses and residents during their off-duty hours. Inactive Duty Soldiers are civilians who have volunteered to serve in the military in order to help keep our country safe. They come from all walks of life and come from all over America; some serving actively while others are reserves or retirees. Today, there is a strong connection between members of both services which has resulted in many friendly interactions between them both on and off-duty days/hours. These interactions have helped make San Jacinto an interesting place to live, work, and visit – something that can only be said about communities that maintain these types of relationships with their Defense Department partners!

The town of San Jacinto, California was founded in 1836 by the Mission Santa Cruz de Jesus Church and Co. as a mission settlement on Rancho San Jacinto. The mission had been established in 1769 by Fr. Jose Altamirano and served as a religious center for the Ohlone people. The town was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who led Mexico's successful war of independence from Spain in 1847-48. For many years, San Jacinto was one of the most important settlements in southern California due to its location at the mouth of the Colorado River and its relative abundance of water resources. However, over time, its economic viability declined as cattle ranching became more common and its population decreased from around 5,000 in 1950 to 2 inhabitants in 2000. In 1821, the Republic of California was founded by a group of American soldiers and citizens who had fought for independence from Mexico. The Mexican government claimed the area as part of their territory, and in 1846, Mexico-American War began when American forces invaded California. On July 24,1846, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at San Jacinto Rancho Viejo after a three-day battle. With Santa Anna in custody, the Americans claimed victory over Mexico and set up their own government in California. The Battle of San Jacinto has been celebrated annually since 1850 as a day to remember America's victory over Mexico. The battle is also an important historical landmark because it helped solidify the U.S.-Mexico relationship and led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war. The rancho was given to US soldier James Bowie byMexican President Vicente Guerrero on December 15,1846. In 1889, portions of San Jacinto were turned into scenic forest preserve known as Los Padres National Forest
The first permanent English settlement in the area was at Monterey Bay in 1602, when Captain John Smith and his group of Anglo-Norman sailors landed on San Francisco Bay. The British soon abandoned their claim to the bay, and a series of intermittent Spanish settlements followed. In 1777, Mexico achieved independence from Spain, and the Mexican–American War began with an American invasion of Mexico. After three years of fighting, the Americans emerged victorious and completed their takeover of California by 1848. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the war, California was divided into parts including Alta California (the easternmost portion), which became known as Arizona Territory; Mexican Baja California (the westernmost portion), which became known as Chihuahua Territory; and Texas included in United States territory along with all present-day Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico and Alaska. The new nation also acquired title to most of what is now Utah and Colorado.
