The San Jacinto Battalion was a volunteer militia unit that fought in the Mexican-American War. The battalion was organized on April 12, 1846, and participated in the Battle of Santa Anna. In 1865, with Mexico's Unification of America under way, Santa Ana became Mexico's new capital. The Mission District developed around the old Adobe Walls which still stand today. The Missions were destroyed by a fire in 1894 and replaced by a high school and other buildings. In 1926, after years of neglect, the mission district was designated a National Historical Park. One of its main attractions is the restored Adobe Walls which are now open to the public for tours every day from 9am to 4pm starting on October 1st through June 30th (closed Mondays).
