The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of giving back to the community. From donating equipment and supplies to local organizations, the USAF has been a major player in helping make San Jose a great place to live, work and raise children. One of the most recent examples of the USAF’s generosity is its donation of over 1,700 pounds of cargo airlifting equipment to Joe’s Coffee Roasters in San Jose. The aircraft was donated by Boeing Co., Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and Mountain View Federal Credit Union – all in support of military veteran homelessness initiatives. In addition to their donations, the USAF has also partnered with various local organizations throughout its history. For example, from 1977-1981, the USAF supplied free airlift services for Santa Clara County residents displaced by an earthquake. In 1998, the USAF donated fuel cells for use by local firefighters during spring wildfires. And in 2013, Lockheed Martin Corp., through its San Jose Technology Solutions Program (SJTSP), provided disaster relief kits for families affected by Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines. The United States Air Force gift history dates back to World War II when theAAF donated over one million items, including airplanes and a variety of munitions, to Allied forces. In 1945, the USAF gifted nearly seventy-five thousand items, including jet aircraft and missiles, to Japan in an effort to rebuild its military. The USAF has bestowed numerous gifts on behalf of American citizens throughout its history, both during wartime and peacetime periods.
The history of San Jose begins with the arrival of Spaniards in 1777. The location was chosen because it offered plenty of open space and good access to water resources. In 1821, San José became part of Mexico and was not returned to American control until 1898. The city developed rapidly during the early 1800s as a result of its location, infrastructure, and industry. In 1851, the California Legislature designated San Jose a county seat, which it held until 1865 when it was moved to Santa Clara County. During this time, the city's economy grew considerably thanks to its population growth and manufacturing capabilities. However, after Santa Clara County formed into its own state in 1850, San Jose's economic fortunes declined because there were no new counties created and trade with other Californias increased prices for goods exported from San Jose. In 1907, General James Wainwright established Camp Bullis as an Army training camp adjacent to the then-new town of San José for soldiers preparing for World War I. With the war ending in 1918, Bullis served as an army base until it closed in 1932 amid budget cuts by Governor George Deukmejian Sr. The city then experienced rapid population growth due to World War II efforts by both local businesses and the federal government to build military installations throughout California due to strategic locations on various coasts including Los Angeles andSan Francisco Bay Area cities that would become key nodes in interstate transportation systems during this time period (see History of Silicon Valley). As a result of these efforts,San José boasted one of America's largest military communities at the time while also becoming home to some America’s leading technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Stanford University (Stanford). During World War II cultural activity increased significantly in downtown San José thanks both to servicemen stationed there from all over America as well as civilians who had come together on social media sites like Flickr or Google Earth to document their experience during wartime (the photojournalism movement). This type of activism is often called “the little wars” since they are typically short-lived but have an outsized impact on later cultures because memories about them linger longterm – something that has been noted about many post-9/11 conflicts across different demographics around North America. A significant factor behind postwar revitalization came from private enterprise; during these years businesses such as IBM Brian Johnson founded Johnson Controls Incorporated; GEICO created Electronic Data Systems; Apple Computer cofounded Apple Associates International; Lockheed Martin purchased Hughes Aircraft Company; Ford Motor Company built Assembly Plant No 2 at Pajaro Valley near El Sobrante; Sunoco startedTexaco Refining Operations #1 at Holloman AFB near Albuquerque NM while Shell Oil Company established Refinery No 1 at Fallon Field near Las Vegas NV among others.
