The Coast Guard has been providing law and order on the San Jose shoreline for over 100 years. In 1902, the first coast guard station was built in San Jose. The Coast Guard Station San José served as a checkpoint for ships entering and exiting the port of San Francisco. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station Silicon Valley was established to provide support for maritime traffic in Silicon Valley. Today, the Coast Guard Station Silicon Valley is one of five USCG stations located along California's central coast. The other four USCG stations are located at Ventura, Santa Barbara, Monterey Bay, and Seal Beach. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect life and property within our borders; preserve our environment; promote safety through innovation; respond to emergencies; support state police activity; serve as an advocate for coastal communities statewide.; The history of gifts from individuals or groups towards the Coast Guard can be traced back to 1872 when General James Kelling donated his estate in Monterey County (now part of Ventura County) to create a military post onshore at Point Conception. Kelling named his post "Henderson" in honor of Rear Admiral John W. Henderson who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1952, following passage of National Defense Authorization Act No. 505 (Public Law 527), President Harry S Truman designated Point Conception as a Naval Air Facility East Bay which would house three squadrons of Navy jet aircraft used for coastal patrol operations and search and rescue missions off Northern California beaches during times of global emergency such as earthquakes or hurricanes. Today, there are more than 2200 members assigned to 176 vessels including 11 command boats and 7 CG Helicopter Units., making it one of America's most capable coast guard detachments.- The Headquarters detachment provides command center services ashore while two detachments provide helicopter flights into/outof port facilities.- A helicopter unit provides search & rescues aboveground while another provides air cover when needed.- A hydrographic survey team assists with mapping coastline

The San Jose coast guard gift history dates back to 1933. At that time, the Coast Guard was established as a separate branch of the government, and until 1946 it was an all-volunteer organization. The first Coast Guard station in San Jose was located at Point Loma, and the first duty of the Coast Guard was to provide security for local shipping lanes and harbors. In 1934, a new building was constructed on North First Street in downtown San Jose to house the Coast Guards office and the patrol boats stationed at points along the Bay Area waterfront. In 1951, when California became a state, the Coast Guard took over responsibility for coastal security from state agencies. The next year saw another building being constructed on North First Street in downtown San Jose – this time as Headquarters for both branches of the Coast Guard. ThisOld Building is still used by both branches today as their headquarters. From 1951-1957 there were also two more buildings built on Point Lobos Road in north Fremont – these were eventually replaced by permanent structures due to growing opulence within the Coast Guards fleet during this time period. In 1967, when California seceded from United States after losing its war with Mexico, part of the federal government fell away and creation of new divisions within government took place including those responsible for law enforcement (the Sheriff’s Department) and public health (the Centers for Disease Control). With no agency specifically charged with protecting our coastline, Coastal Security Branch stepped up efforts to fill this gap by purchasing additional patrol boats and erecting fences along our shorelines in order to keep traffic off our beaches and protect beachgoers from hazardous materials spills or other threats to public safety posed by maritime traffic or residents traveling nearshore without proper permits or warnings! Since then we have continued to grow into one of America’s most well-respected coast guard organizations!
