Gold mining continued until the end of World War II; however, much of contemporary downtown San José was built during this time period including State Street Station which served as community center for many years before being moved to its current location across Yerba Buena Road in 1957. According to The Chronicle Of Higher Education article “The Making Of An American City: A History Of Downtown San José” (2007), downtowns throughout America were changing during this time because larger businesses could not afford or did not want large blocky buildings typical of old downtowns such as Market Street Square which housed several stores and some services along Battery Street between Third and Fourth Streets northward from Market Street—a traditional crossroads for commerce.—So developers began building small two-story restaurants and small office buildings around Battery street with little connection to other parts of town.—Downtown merchants started buying property upriver along Yerba Buena Road so they could have direct access more easily to markets that constituted their core business constituencies.—And finally there was new transportation invented specifically for urbanizing: buses! The city of San Jose, California was founded on January 24, 1849 by Donation of Land to the United States by José Joaquin Murillo. The City was named for General Antonio José de San Jose who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in San Jose opened on December 6, 1851. On February 17, 1861, the City and County of Santa Clara were merged to form a new county named Santa Clara County. On July 16, 1916, San Jose became an incorporated city with a population of over 200,000 people. In 1993, San Jose adopted an official name change to Silicon Valley. The current name comes from the geographic location at the heart of what is known as Northern California's technology industry and center for innovation and research in computer programming languages and software design.
In 1847, the first flush of population growth in San Jose created a need for more land. A Townsite Act was passed in 1851, and developers started to purchase land south of the city limit. The townspeople were not happy with this development and lobbied for an act to annex their lands into the city limits. The City Council agreed to annex the land on May 22, 1859, but only if they could find a way to charge settlers for using city services. This ordinance did not go well with the colonists who felt that they had been taken advantage of. Work began on building San José City Hall in 1861 and finished in 1865. In 1870, San José became an incorporated city with its own government and Mayoralty.
