In 1851 Joseph Pulitzer founded The Examiner newsweekly here; until then local papers had been published from Redwood City and other nearby villages. After two years of construction—and numerous financial setbacks—Pulitzer’s paper finally opened on February 8,1856 with four pages per day of average circulation compared to 100 pages today! This new paper helped drive downtown business away from Redwood City which gradually regained some prominence as an economic center after World War II when industry surged back into town following General Motors’ establishment here in 1951 as their North American plant began assembly operations within sight of our old bank building where research laboratories used to be conducted! However much progress has been made since that time – redlining occurred throughout most of downtown during this time – but we are still trying to recapture that glory days past!

After the war ended there were increased demands for housing due to postwar population growth in south Santa Clara County; accordingly, Mayor Arturo Fraga led a campaign to build more public housing units throughout downtown which culminated in passage of Measure T in 1947 The city experienced rapid growth following passage of Proposition 13 in 1978 which banned issueable municipal lands from sale or use without voter approval; this saw development occur near Interstate 280 and State Route 237 between Downtown and South Park Avenue . Many large office buildings were erected during this period including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (now UC Berkeley medical center), Lockheed Martin facilities at Coyote Hills Road/Alameda Street SW & Apple Valley Road/Kamen Rider Drive NW., Hewlett-Packard facilities at Town Creek Rd./Alameda Street NE., Merrill Lynch facilities at Eastshore Dr./Santa Clara Lane NW., Intel Corporation's semiconductor research laboratory at Fair Oaks Dr./Evelyn Ave NE., Safeway Stores Inc.'s store locating adjacent to Interstate 5 across street from City Hall
