In the 16th century, Portuguese sailors discovered Java and began trading with India for coffee. Coffee was introduced to Europe by Spanish traders in the 17th century. Dutch traders also started importing coffee into Europe during this time. Coffee wasn’t actually made until 1453 when an Italian named Pizarro tasted some beans while exploring Peru. After tasting this unique bean, he realized that it could be used to make a beverage that would please European tastes. From here on out, coffee became popular all over the world and sales increased exponentially! Coffee has been enjoyed by people of all cultures for centuries! The coffee industry began in early Mesoamerica, and the first beans were roasted near the city of Teotihuacan in central Mexico. The Maya used a different kind of roasting method that resulted in a higher quality cup of coffee, which was what brought them into contact with Europeans. Coffee beans were brought to Spain by Columbus in search of new routes to Asia. With the fall of the Spanish Empire, most of Europe got their hands on some Indian-grown coffee, and this allowed European colonies to become rich through trading with Asia. The Dutch founded their first colony at Java in 1599, and soon after they started importing African slaves to work on their plantations. In 1624 Captain John Smith discovered New Amsterdam (now Manhattan) while sailing through the Caribbean Sea, and he named it Staten Island after his old master, Hendrik Hudson. By 1664 all Dutch colonies had been lost to English forces during the Anglo-Dutch War (the Three Kingdoms War). However, Dutch traders continued to bring coffee back home until 1673 when England seizures all Dutch trade within her empire. In 1795 Prince George II of Brunswick introduced photography as an advertising medium for his plantation breeding program in Africa; this led to a significant increase in world production of coffee beans from about 2 metric tons per year at midcentury up to about 20 metric tons per year by 1800.
The history of San Jose, California spans over more than a century. The city was founded on January 17, 1847 by pioneer Captain John C. Fremont and his party of gold seekers as the new capital of California. The city grew steadily in population over the years, reaching its peak in 1950 with a total Population of over 153,000 people. However, the growth of suburbs and other economic activities led to San Jose's decline in population from the late 1960s until 1990 when it regained its former stature as an important commercial and cultural center in Northern California. Today, San Jose is located near Silicon Valley and is home to some of the most significant technology companies in the world.
The first Europeans to arrive in San Jose, California were Spanish Missionaries in 1777. The area that is now San Jose was part of the Rancho Santa Clara de Atascadero Mexican land grant given to Manuel Nieto and his brother by Governor José Joaquín de Herrera on November 6, 1821. On December 12, 1825, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War and granted United States citizenship to all those who had fought in it. In 1850, a group of Mormon settlers from Utah arrived in what is nowSan Jose with the goal of establishing a colony. They built their first log cabin near present-day Yerba Buena Park. The first post office was established at Coyote Point on February 11, 1851. In 1856, during the Gold Rush, some prospectors discovered gold near where San Jose lies today. This led to an influx of people and businesses into what is now downtown San Jose. The city's municipal charter was adopted on January 14, 1870. The new municipality included most of what is now Silicon Valley as well as parts of Oakland and Berkeley counties east of Palo Alto (then Alameda County). In 1893–94 voters approved a sales tax for city government purposes which funded public works such as street cleanups and Improvements to School Streets (now Pioneer Place). On October 15, 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck residents living around Pacific Heights including San José; this caused extensive damage both inside and outside the city limits due to collapsing buildings and injuries sustained among people working inside collapsed structures. As a result many jobs were lost within days after the quake strike while others became unavailable because supplies needed for reconstruction were not available until much later Three years later on April 16th 1911 another severe Earthquake hit causing extensive damage along fault lines lying just south from downtown between Palo Alto Hills (northwest suburbs)and Livermore hills (southwest suburban), this again resulted in loss or destruction of many jobs but also saw increased traffic due to reopened streets leading up north towards Stanford University; business owners quickly adapted by relocating customers/workers out into adjacent neighborhoods away from potential damage as well as opening new businesses within blocks or less radius from old ones which served as anchors for these new neighborhoods
