The San Jose National Guard was established in 1881 as the San Francisco Reserve Battalion of Volunteers. The Guard has grown to become one of the largest volunteer organizations in California with over 120,000 active duty members and their families. The Guard is responsible for many law enforcement, disaster relief and ceremonial functions statewide. The history of the San Jose National Guard began on December 15th, 1881 when a group of citizens from San Francisco petitioned Governor James M. Blaine for the establishment of a militia battalion to provide security for the city during its first years as a republic. On October 1st, 1882, Captain John Ahern commanding company C (of Company D) organized at City Hall and reported to Brigadier General Charles Halleck at Fort Mason that he had met with 30 other civilians who desired membership in his battalion. On November 3rd, 1882 Captain Ahern’s battalion numbered fifty men and was placed under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Sibley with orders to garrison various points within the city limits until organizing into companies could be completed. On January 5th, 1886 Major John Fenton assumed command ofCompany K which had been detached from Company G (now part of Company I) due to financial difficulties; K extended its services throughout Santa Clara County until it eventually disbanded in 1898 because too few soldiers were available for military service during World War I while more than enough volunteers enlisted in other armed forcesWWI). In 1912 Headquarters Battery No 1255 (1st Artillery) was activated at MacArthur Barracks after being mustered out by Company G (later Companies E and F). In 1922 Headquarters Battery No 1255 relocated from MacArthur Barracks to new buildings at Elmira Army Air Field after being reactivated there following World War II; prior to this it had been located at Moffett Field Airport where it remained until 1991 when it moved permanently to Lockheed Martin facility adjacent thereto although still providing artillery fire support for Joint Base El Toro-San Clemente-Tustin between these two installations(See footnote 2)). A detachment from Headquarters Battery No 1255 also served concurrently with Troop H (Riflemen), elements Sierra Club rifle team #2 at Coyote Hills Ammunition Depot between 1951-1957; detachments consisting mostly Riflemen serve concurrently through most or all exercises held each year outside encampment location except Hawaii Defense Exercises where Infantry units are used only occasionally In 1947 Headquarters Battery No 1255 relocated again when Navy Weapons Center opened ((See footnote 3))’ In 1990 HQ Battery transferred back from Lockheed Martin property adjacent thereto undergoing conversion into an Infantry unit effective September 1st following installation ceremony attended by Commanding General Don Armstrong Headquarters battery continues providing artillery fire support currently assigned detachment consists mostly of Rifleman Personnel Units have served intermittently since inception including 1994 thru 1998 Hawaii DefenseExercises

The San Jose National Guard has been in existence since 1879. The first unit was organized on December 12, 1879 by order of the President of the United States. The organization was then known as the California Volunteer Infantry Regiment and it served in the Mexican-American War. The regiment was expedited to being called into service for World War I on April 14, 1916 and served until September 1939 when it returned home. On July 1, 1949, the regiment became a part of the National Guard Bureau under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Edwin C. "Buzz" Aldrin who also served as Commanding Officer from 1951 to 1955 and from 1957 to 1959. During his tenure he renamed the regiment Company A (National Guardsmen) which remained with brigade level command until becoming an infantry battalion on October 1, 1959 with Headquarters at City Hall Plaza. Finally, Company A's current status is Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (San Jose).

In the United States, there are a number of different types of national guard gift history. The National Guard was activated in 1903 as a federal service organization with the creation of the Department of Justice. The National Guard enjoyed increased popularity and funding during World War I, which contributed to its growth in numbers and capabilities. The Guard's role during World War II was scaled back as the war progressed, but it was reactivated in 1944 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs. TheGuard saw further growth following the Korean War, which gave rise to newprocessor requirements for military forces. In 1964, the Guard received full statehood and became an agency of the United States government separate from the Department of Defense. The city of San Jose was founded on December 12, 1795 by Pedro Menéndez de Avila and Julián Castro. It became a municipality in 1868 and then an incorporated city on November 13, 1891. The population of the city peaked at about 220,000 in 1950 but has since declined to around 150,000. Today, the city is a small bedroom community with a population of just over 100,000 people. San Jose is located on the southern coast of California between San Francisco and Oakland. The area that would become San Jose was first occupied by the Ohlone tribe before becoming part of Spanish Mission Santa Fé in 1776. In 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain and granted land to Californios subject to Mexican law. This land included what is now San José. The city’s history begins with its founding as a mission town by Pedro Menéndez de Avila in 1795. After years of construction work, Avila’s new settlement came into being on December 12th of that year after he arrived from New Mexico with his band of missionaries to begin missionary work in this area. At first it was only intended for indigenous people who helped serve as auxiliaries to Spanish priests during their time here; however soon enough other native groups also began arriving including members of the Ohlone tribe which had begun inhabiting this region some 5 centuries earlier.* In 1868 San José became an incorporated City underMexican law following its victory in a referendum against annexation by Alameda County.* A major growth period followed starting in the early 1920s when automobiles were becoming common and jobs were needed to support this new technology which was changing all across America at that time* However despite these successes during this time period social unrest occurred occasional riots or strikes which often led to loss of life or damage done to businesses*.
