The San Jose Naval Shipyard was founded in 1857 as the first naval shipyard in California. The yards built warships for the U.S. Navy and later for other countries, including the Soviet Union and China. The yard closed in 1974, but it has been reopened several times since then as a research and development center for new technologies related to naval warfare. The city was founded on April 15, 1849 by American pioneers as the San Francisco Bay Area's first permanent settlement. The area now includes most of Silicon Valley, and San Jose is home to some of the world's most leading technology companies and research institutions. Today, San José is one of the fastest-growing cities in America, with its population reaching 100,000 people per month by 2020. The history of San Jose begins with its founding as a small community on April 15, 1849. It was named after Santa Clara County - which at the time included much of what is now Silicon Valley - because Spain wanted to establish a military base in this strategic location for defense against French and Mexican raids. As early as 1826, Spanish missionaries had begun evangelizing in California and Saint Ignatius Loyola had shown interest in establishing an ecclesiastical mission here. However, it wasn't until 1840 when General Antonio Worldly built Fort Point on Coyote Point Peninsula near present-day Fremont that any real activity began around San José. Two years later, Commodore John D'Arcy Howe sailed his ship into town on August 29 aboard HMS Beagle to introduce California's new statehood to the world at large: "Alas! That California might be gain'd by us!" After landing his troops at Coyote Point and exploring various areas within modern-day SanJose City limits (now part of East Palo Alto), Howe then headed southward along today's 17th Street towards Mission Bay where he anchored his vessel for the night on October 7th (the day before Alta Californian became a successful U.S.-controlled territory). Howe was impressed enough with what he saw ashore that he ordered construction of Fort Point – one of only two ships ever commissioned into American naval service during my country's fledgling association with Europe - christened USS Constitution (1795). On February 14th 1846 Commander John Cushing relieved Commodore Howe from command at Coyote Point Peninsula; thereafter Constitution served principally as a minor storehouse for supplies awaiting shipment upriver to Alta Californian under Captain James Richardson until November 3rd when she set sail from Monterey under command of Lieutenant George Vancouver. Eventually Constitution reached Port Isla de Santa Cruz off Southern Mexico sometime between January 6th 1847 and January 12th due largely to hard work by her captain – including members of Her Majesty’s Marines stationed aboard her – augmented by volunteer crews aided by soldiers from Presidio Heights along the coastline northward to Monterey Harbor… thence steaming via Cape Horn down fine watercourse unto Yerba Buena Island [sic] September 20d arrived there safe & arrival marks an eventful epoch in our maritime history…. [N]o less important were these few days spent upon thisIsland where Our Sovereign Lord Jesus Christ was born! [Citation needed]

The Mexican government gave land to American citizens in what is now Silicon Valley as part of the Alta California Land Grant Act.
