The city of San Jose, California was founded on April 25, 1851 by Don José deBalboa and his wife Maria Elena Gutierrez. The Balboa family was Spanish and originally from Cuba. The first European to sight the present-day San Jose area was a group of fishermen who were sailing in the Bay of Monterey when they reported seeing land to the north. A story has it that Juan Bautista Pico, captain of the Santa Fe, saw an even larger landmass to the south while sailing through what is now Silicon Valley. After landing on shore to explore, Pico named the spot "San Jose" after Saint Jerome (c. 455 – 495). In 1852, General mapped out a town site for San José on Rancho Rinconada near today's downtown area. However, because San José had not yet been founded as a town, no one moved into the area until 1855 when James Mudgett erected a adobe cabin in what is now downtown for himself and his two Indian allies - Pedro Menendez and Juan Miguel Castro - as part of their exploration for rancho grants. Santa Clara County was organized on March 3, 1850 under Mexican rule following Mexico's defeat at Buena Vista Creek during the American victory over Mexico in 1846. As part of this arrangement between Mexico and America, Anglo settlers were allowed access to most of California but were forbidden from settling in missions or other areas east of Sierra Nevada mountain range including parts of today's Silicon Valley and Palo Alto counties. In December 1850m Yolo County was formed from parts of Santa Clara and Alameda Counties with its capital at Redwood City
