The San Juan Capistrano Air Force Base is home to the California Air National Guard's 6th Bomb Wing. The wing provides air support for military and civilian operations in the Southern California area. The base has been a major factor in the city's growth, as it has helped to educate residents about aviation and its importance in local life. The 6th Bomb Wing was founded at San Juan Capistrano AFB on October 3, 1948. It was activated as an operational squadron of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Ninth Air Force. At first, the wing operated Boeing B-29 Superfortresses from Incirlik AB, Turkey. In 1951, whenactivated Tenth Air Force activated at San Juan Capistrano AFB as a Wright-Patterson AFB unit with Douglas A-4 Skyhawks and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts assigned. In 1955, when Ninth AF disbanded itself and its wings were reassigned to other commands; 9th BW became part of 515th Bombardment Group at NAS Lompoc CA which was later moved to Vandenberg AFB CA; however activation of this group did not take place until 1957 when it became an element of 521st Bombardment Wing which patrolled over Iwo Jima during World War II before being transferred there in 1944 In 1968–1969 USAF tried unsuccessfully to convert all available Navy ships into Military Airlift Command transports using C-141 Starlighters but these efforts failed due to cost overruns In 1969 USAF deployed 82nd Space Wing ( predating 9/11 ) aboard Northrop Grumman E-2D Hawkeye aircraft providing no live launch capability but making two flybys of Kwajalein Atoll in March 1969 during Operation Neptune's Spear military operation against North Korea In 1973 USAFE deployed 68th Space Wing aboard McDonnell Douglas VC10 Aircraft providing live launch capability for both US reconnaissance satellites Upgraded KC135 Stratotanker(later Boeing 747SP) were leased by USAF from Royal Jordanian Airlines between 1970 and 1980 These missions continued until 1990 On 1 October 1988 USAF announced that they would be retiring all their aging bomber planes except for one KC135 "Stratojet" that would remain operational until replaced by Lockheed Martin C130J Hercules starting on 1 April 1989 As a result many businesses closed down or increased costs because they could not operate without bombers while some people lost their jobs because none of their vecinity could rely on air support

The United States Air Force, or USAF for short, has been providing aerial support to the American people since World War II. The USAF has played an important role in both the Cold War and the War on Terror. Today, the USAF is one of America’s most powerful and complex militaries. It employs more than 181,000 individuals and operates more than 620 air bases around the world. The USAAF was founded as a branch of the army in September 1943. The first commander of the USAF was General Curtis LeMay. The USAF was created as part of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s executive order 4694 which called for an organization to be established to provide aerial support to Allied troops during World War II. On December 8th, 1944, President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 15265 which designated Air Forces Europe (AFE) as a separate entity within the military structure of America. AAFE would control all forces stationed in Europe responsible for conducting combat operations against Nazi Germany and its allies from October 1st 1945 until May 7th 1946 when AAFE merged with NATO’s European Command (ECM). In 1949 Congress passed Public Law 95-468 which renamed Headquarters United States Air Force (HQUSAF) at Maxwell AFB “the Pentagon” after then Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. In 1969 HQUSAF relocated from downtown Washington D C to MacDill AFB FL where it continues today as one of America’s most important military commands. In 1847, San Juan Capistrano was founded as a mission by Father Junípero Serra and the Sisters of Charity. The city grew rapidly in the early 1800s due to its strategic location as a port on the Pacific Railroad. In 1851, San Juan Capistrano became an independent town, and in 1912 it became a city. Today, San Juan Capistrano is known for its beautiful beaches and historical landmarks such as Our Lady of Loreto Cathedral.
In 1821, San Juan Capistrano was founded by Father José Altamirano as an Encampment for the Mission Santa Clara. The town was named in honor of Don Mariano de Alcalá y Pavón, captain-general of the Mexican army and viceroy of New Spain. In 1828, the Franciscans built a new church in San Juan Capistrano. A year later, they established a school here to teach children from poor families how to read and write. In 1851, after California became a state, San Juan Capistrano became the seat of county government for Imperial County. In 1857 it was renamed after General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his campaign againstMexican rebels under Joaquín Valenzuela. On April 16, 1861, following Mexico's declaration of war on America over Texas independence (the Gadsden Purchase), General Lopez ordered his troops into action at Palo Alto against American forces commanded by Major General John Custer. After suffering heavy losses at nearby Bridal Hill and Glorietta Heights, Mexican troops retreated back to San Juan Capistrano that night under cover of darkness. On October 15th 1861 Californians voted in favor of secession from the United States; this event is often considered the start of the American Civil War. Confederate forces besieged Spanish Fort on December 12th 1861; less than two months later on January 8th 1862 Commodore John Doolittle's Bataan Peninsula Campaign ended with American success at Morro Bay when Admiral Dewey destroyed all but one battalion of Spanish Marines garrisoning that fort.]]
