San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1769 by the Franciscan friar Junipero Serra. The town is located on the southern coast of San Miguel County, about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Its population was 9,000 in 1930 and has grown steadily since then to over 127,000 today. Many people from around California came to visit him at Garza de la Cruz before beginning their journey northward through Mexico into what would become America. In 1821 San Juan Capistrano joined Alta California as part of Rancho Cucamonga which included present-day Los Angeles County and parts of Orange County and Riverside County. The following year it became a part of Mexican territory when Mexico achieved independence from Spain. Over time San JuanCapistrano grew increasingly prosperous due to its location on the sea shoreline between two major ports - Ventura Harbor on the Pacific Ocean side and Long Beach Harbor on the inland side - making it an ideal place for shipping purposes. Additionally, some land grantees built large estates here such as Antonio Canoga who owned 400 acres (160 hectares) bordering Onnick Bay in 1909; Waddell & Friend who owned 640 acres (240 hectares) adjoining Point Mugu National Monument; John Sutter who bought 1/3rd interest in Rancho Santa Anafrom Manuel Nieto in 1848; among others . Although during much of its history San Juan Capistrano experienced less than average levels of development due primarily to factors such as its location within Mexican territory lacking proper infrastructure or entrepreneurism on the part of its founders or later residents - albeit with some notable exceptions - it nonetheless retains strong community spirit today despite faced with some difficult challenges such as dwindling resources or competition from more recent arrivals such as Las Vegas which has replaced San JuanCapistrano as both a commercial center for Southern Californians and also home to significant Hispanic populations . Today's residents are considered descendants not justof those who first settled here but also successive waves Of Italian American settlers arriving during World War II , later waves OF Latinos coming during various waves OF immigration culminating in current day Latino immigrants FLOWING INTO THE COUNTY FROM ALL OVER AMERICA
