San Juan Capistrano is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 54,858 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Spanish word "San Juan," meaning "Saint John." San Juan Capistrano, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 37,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The name means " Santiago's place" in Spanish. The first permanent European settler in what is now San Juan Capistrano was José María Escobar who arrived on October 14, 1824 from Santa Ana and sent word to his family back home that he had found a land grant of 5 leagues (10 miles) square with Dos Ríos Creek on one side and Mission Viejo on the other for his brother Miguel de la Cruz to explore and claimed. A post office called San Juancapistrano was established in 1827 by Captain John Sutter and named for San Juan Capistrano Island off Santa Barbara County where he had landed some days earlier from Yuma after sailing down the Mexican coast. In 1851, American pioneer Anthony Boucher came through this area looking for gold nuggets near present-day Springdale and discovered red earth deposits which led him to start mining hereabouts. In 1865–66 he organized an outfit called the "Donner Party" which became famous for their successful crossing of the mountains into Oregon overland during winter season 1 January 1846-15 February 1847 as part of their attempt to find a route across North America via Southern California en route to Gold Rush lands beyond what is now Nevada or Arizona.
